Trouble with Huge Maps?

I don't know if this is a problem with huge maps or my system.

I started my first game as the Greeks on the huge earth map, using the recommended Civ V setting. It started me in North Africa on the Nile river and worked fine. After I had explored Africa and some of the Middle-East, it started freezing on me every few turns.

I than started playing on the Directx9 settings and it again worked great with some bell and whistle loss. After I had explored most of Europe and Asia and sent my first caravel off towards the Americas, it started crashing my entire system every few turns causing me to restart my computer.

My questions:
Is this probably my system?
Is it something that will be addressed later with a patch?
What adjustments might I make to the setup to help?

Thanks, I guess that, meanwhile, I will start over on a standard sized map.

I'm playing a huge earth map too. No crashes or freezes yet but everything is VERY slow. Everytime I end a turn I have to wait 5 minutes for my next one to start

I've been having the same crashing and freezing problems on huge map and marathon length.

Think some people have been saying their game slows/crashes more based on what you see, so a larger empire with more visible tiles lags harder regardless of map size.

For me personally running a huge map on a subpar system, the exploration phase was actually the most crash-tastic. My game would often freeze as the screen panned to wildly different locations where my ships were poking around.

Once things settled down and I was moving less junk around it got a lot better.

I agree on the above since I had the same issues.

I say HAD because I decided to turn off tessellation and the game runs better.
My spec is Q6600 @ 3.8, 4GB DDR850 and a 5850 on W7 64. (Yes everything even the gfx are overclocked to death usually).

mine crashes every 10 turns on huge, marathon. But more because i try to do two things at once then wait till it loads the square... quite annoying though

I've had reboot crashes about three times now, however I have the game up nearly 24 hours each time...

I've played huge map first go around but found the time between turns unbearable... So now I play small maps only and even with 20 civs on the map the turns are like 5 seconds...
