Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 155
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////////////////////////////
Welcome to the 155th game in the GOTM V Training Series! This Series will allow new and old GOTM fans to try out these features from Civ5's expansions and DLCs in a friendly environment. Participants are encouraged to post questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads (described below). Each game will specify the Civ you will play and the Victory Condition to strive for. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread.
Must Read!
We would like to ask you to abide by our most sacred rule: Don't replay any turns! If you make a mistake, accept it and try to recover. To ensure fair play and prevent results exclusions, please set your Autosaves to 1 turn. In the event of a computer crash while playing, just reload to the previous save and play it as closely to how you played it the first time. Please let Leif, Hammer Rabbi or me know (either in the forums or through Private Message) if you experienced a crash and how many turns you replayed.

Information about threads associated with each individual TSG -- Must Read if you are new to our Game of the Month!
Spoiler :
Please note: If you wish to make a video of your game, please do not post any links to it until after the game submission date has passed. This is because of the potential spoilers that are created by posting before the end date. Thank you for your cooperation.
TSG Announcement thread (this one): This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (dont be afraid to ask questions). Its also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please dont post any game-related info once you open and play the save. Instead use the next thread.
Opening Actions thread: This thread is used to discuss the game's opening decisions and strategies through the first 100 or so turns. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. We encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshot. During the time the game is active, please do not post any information concerning the game outside of the spoiler threads including screen shots, videos, or recorded/live-cast Let's Plays on other websites.
After Actions thread: In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state your victory/loss date (preferably in the post title) and describe your path to glory in this post! Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after one month, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.
Results and Congratulations thread: We will create a separate thread with the results at the end of the one month submission period (sorted by earliest date and highest score ). We will issue a medal to the top winner (based on earliest date finished for each VC). There are no long-term records kept for these results, they are just given out to top finishers to reward their efforts.

File Upload System
We have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature) Please note: you must submit your game on the turn following Victory. If you continue to play, the game overwrites the data and your submission could be rejected by the submission system.
This game runs for a month and ends April 17th, 2017.
The save will be available for download on March 17 2017 midnight Central Standard time (UTC -6:00) in the US.
The Save can be found here.

If you please, what goes into making a high score? Wonders? Population? Territory? Certainly all that! Is there an article that outlines how to play for score? Thanks!

From here:

Code:
WONDER_MULTIPLIER 25 (per world wonder)
BELIEF_MULTIPLIER 20 (per belief - max 100 without reformation, 120 with reformation or as Byzantium and 140 for Byzantium with reformation)
FUTURE_TECH_MULTIPLIER 10 (each time future tech is researched)
CITY_MULTIPLIER 8 (per city)
POPULATION_MULTIPLIER 4 (per pop)
TECH_MULTIPLIER 4 (per tech)
POLICY_MULTIPLIER 4 (per policy)
GREAT_WORK_MULTIPLIER 4 (per great work)
LAND_MULTIPLIER 1 (per workable tile)
RELIGION_CITIES_MULTIPLIER 1 (per city following your religion)

Not sure how Large/Sandstorm/Quick affects this, but it shouldn't matter too much. As for how to play high score games, your goal is to have as many cities as possible and grow them as much as possible. Here's a screenshot from one of my Time VC games as an example of what a final score distribution might look like:
Spoiler :
2015-10-03_00002.jpg

A few things about Time games:
- Freedom is the ideology of choice because of the food from specialists tenet
- You have to actively avoid winning an accidental culture victory. Don't build any hotels (can't sell them as they have 0 maintenance cost) and only make great works in the very end, delay researching the Internet if you have any tourism. Conquer early, before AIs create too many great works
- You want a lot of happiness = a lot of policies, so you need a strong World's Fair and a good number of Great Writers to burn, and also Cristo and Representation for culture cost discounts. Note that on a Large map as Egypt you probably don't need such a happiness heavy religion. I'd probably go for DF, tithe, food from shrines and temples, pagodas or temple happiness and 50 faith per Great Person used
- After the World's Fair, expand like crazy. What you do before World's Fair is personal preference - you can treat it sort of like a science game and stay tall, or you could slowly expand to 20-ish cities or more. On Large/Quick I think I'd recommend the latter

vadalaz - "You have to actively avoid winning an accidental culture victory."

Am I right in thinking that, with all VCs disabled, the accidental culture victory is no longer a risk?

As for the rest of your post, thank you! A big help.

Ah, didn't see that bit in the announcement. Yeah, there's no risk then. I assume you can also take every city on the map and leave no survivors since DomV is off...

Thanks @vadalaz. But that screen shot alone gives me pause! I do not think it would be much fun to play that way, and since I do not seem to be able to play competitively, I am not sure I see the point of even trying.

So the important wonders are probably ToA, Petra, Notre Dame, and Forbidden Palace. Not sure whether to go Liberty or Tradition.

beetle,"... since I do not seem to be able to play competitively, I am not sure I see the point of even trying."

If you're out to beat the world, I agree. But if your goal is to do better than you did last time, then there's every reason to give it a shot, particularly in an unusual game like this.

There are great players out there. Not only will I never beat them, I'll never come close. But there are others in the middle where sometimes, if I'm lucky, I might edge ahead a little bit.

On rare occasions, like this time, I catch something a good player misses which helps to make that good player even better. And again, because vadalaz is a very good player, missing something leads to another careful look revealing the domination opportunity.

You're right. Those are quite the impressive totals on that screen shot.

I just opened vadalaz's spoiler screenshot. Wow. How many cities was that?? Not sure how to convert points to cities. . .

I've already played TSG 155 (accidentally stayed up almost all night Sunday) and posted my results in the AAR thread. Needless to say, my totals were pathetic by comparison. But I beat the AI's by a large margin, and I had fun. Beetle, you should do the same (I bet you can top my score)

Keep in mind that screenshot is from a Duel game without a turn limit on Standard speed. It's not too hard to entirely fill such a small map with cities in 500 turns (looks like 42 cities; pretty sure most standard size maps have room for 150+). Filling a large map in 250 turns on Quick not only seems impossible to me, it's also bound to make the game lag really badly. Civ5 isn't optimized very well.

I should not have been so skeptical. My first game was rather pathetic, but the setup was interesting enough that I replaced a second time pretty much from scratch. That is my benchmark for a good game, so thanks Knowtalent and everyone for the encouragement!
