Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 249
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ //////////////////////////////////////
Welcome to the 249th game in the GOTM V Training Series! This Series allows new and old Civilization V fans to try out many features from Civ5's expansions and DLCs in a friendly environment. Participants are encouraged to post questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads (described below). Each game will specify the Civ you will play and the Victory Condition to strive for. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread.

MUST READ!
Our most sacred rule: Do not replay any turns!
If you make a mistake, accept it, and try to recover through game-play. To ensure fair play and prevent results exclusions, please set your Autosaves to "1 turn". In the event of a computer crash while playing, just reload to the previous autosave, then play on the same way you played it the first time. Please let Leif or me know (either in the forums or through Private Message) if you experienced a crash and how many turns you replayed.

Information about threads associated with each individual TSG - Must Read if you are new to the Game of the Month!

Please note:

Spoiler :

If you wish to make a video of your game, please do not post any links to it until after the game submission date has passed. This is because of the potential spoilers that are created by posting before the end date. Thank you for your cooperation.
TSG Announcement thread (this one): This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don't be afraid to ask questions). Its also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don't post any game-related info once you open and play the save. Instead use the next thread.
After Actions thread: In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state your victory/loss date (preferably in the post title) and describe your path to glory in this post! Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after one month, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

File Upload System
Spoiler :

We have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature) Please note: you must submit your game on the turn following Victory. If you continue to play, the game overwrites the data and your submission could be rejected by the submission system.
This game runs through August 15th 2024.

Not sure I understand the completed game file upload. One more turn - easy enough. Hard save immediately after the one more turn, exit the game, upload the hard save?

The Sun God shines on that starting position, lacking coast only.

Does it pay off to eliminate opponents on diplomatic games? Is the number of world leader votes needed decreased?

Thanks. Playing one more turn after the victory (i.e. Diplo victory screen to start Turn 250 but continuing to play until Turn 251) didn't make sense, so just wanted to confirm.

Sun God the Pantheon? Are you seeing something I'm not or is this Ra?

Don't know about AI opponents counting toward the number of votes needed. But if Alex is in the game, he might just have to be eliminated. Oh and Austria and Venice too.

I'll move the warrior to the hill to the north but I can't imagine anything would make me move away from a hill/river/mountain next to wheat and a deer start!

I guess that implies someone might upload their game, so why not me (other than the facts that I haven't done any 4x games, and my CRPG videos can be described, at best, as "meh" or "why")? Clearly, the 2024 internet needs new Civ 5 material! Plenty of time to back out of this intention, but I'll at least capture the play. If I decide to upload them, I'll start doing so on Aug 16 and post a link to the playlist.

Pre-Game Discussion - Overall Goal
Spoiler :
The stated objective is Diplomacy Victory, so that, plus the primary objective of having fun while doing it, will be the focus. I guess GOTM is judged somehow, but I didn't really notice any scoring system - might as well just have fun while aiming for the Diplo V. As a result, this won't be a speed run, power run, optimized run, or anything like that. Instead, I just want to build a glorious empire with all the wonders so it's self-evident that Pacal, clearly, is the ONLY choice to elect as World Leader! In case some CRPG followers accidentally watch the series, I might throw some role play into it. Perhaps as the ultimate peace maker (pay other AIs to make peace in their wars, maybe)??

Pre-Game Discussion - Initial Map Observations
Spoiler :
Where's the salt??? Why isn't that ivory salt instead? Put another one on the non-river plains tiles next to it, too! Change that gold into copper just to make Earth Mother viable!! Fine, I guess I'll settle with the river, hill, mountain, with two bonus resources in the first ring. Send the warrior east (looks flatter) to look for city state gold, potential expansion locations, and some AIs. Since there are no ancient ruins, I think I'll start with a monument followed up by a scout and pyramid.

Doesn't look like the starting location provides a decent faith pantheon, but as the Mayans with pyramids, it seems likely I'll get at least a pantheon. Even if I get a religion though, I doubt I'd be able to defend it. In these types of situations, I generally take something for early game benefit such as God King or Religious Settlements (border expansion). However, I really want to build wonders (will likely try for multiple Ancient/Classical Wonders), so maybe I'll go with Monument to the Gods?

Play starts tonight after work - looking forward to it!

To answer, @ForkOfSpite, on your initial map observations, remember that the Frontier map template does not have all that many resources in general. And furthermore, on King it is not about winning the game, but the path all of you choose. Hopefully there will be some interesting differences to discuss in the Opening/After Actions Threads.

Hill + river + mountain, and a mineable lux to boot. Should be a fun one. An early granary may be the way to go. 4 visible gold means supporting Atlatlists will be no problem.

Hey guys, I know I'm late here and I'm getting back into civ. Just won an Immortal CV as the mayans using piety without tradition or liberty. Totally going the full piety route this game with charitable missions. I need shrines anyway for the easy science. Hopefully there's space to go wide, get +2gpt from cities with religion and the friendly CS religious pressure.

My biggest issue with king difficulty is how slow the ai is at early gold and resource generation. The easy part is focusing solely on faith and science without needing much military. Should be fun! I'll start playing tonight

Ugh.... just realized this is a game too late. Can I still play and upload? It should be quick. But man I'm upset I'm late to the party
I still play *very* old GOTM games just for fun that I either skipped, or enough times has passed I've forgotten all the details about. Or want to see if I can do better this time now that I've played a few Immortal-level games and hopefully learned somethng. You can even post your results in the discussion thread and you might get some replies. I never upload my games so I don't know about that part.

Why don't you upload them? I think part of the fun is discussing mistakes and strats etc.

I do upload pics and I do discuss them, I just don't bother with the game files. (for a while I think uploading wasn't working and I just got in the habit of not doing it)

Ohhhh gotcha. My bad man. Well in any case, I'll post my victory and pics tomorrow. Now I just got to remember how to take screenshot and where to find them in my files lol.

The screenshots are hard to find; when you do find them save a shortcut to them on your desktop. On my computer they are in
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\107161955\760\remote\8930\screenshots" rather than somewhere in the Documents\My Games folder where one would expect. HTH

Speaking of uploads - can someone briefly summarize the point and how to review the "final rankings"? I'm guessing it's judged on the game score, but is there more to it?
