I’m going to try and post more on the “off weeks” of GotM. Coming up with these games takes more time than I realized though, whew. So hats off to Vadalaz and Nizef for keeping GotM going!
Early game totally messed up by a surprise war by France that I wasn't prepared for. I lost a city Rabat but got it back (he gave it back in a peace deal after his army was wiped out). The rest of the game I was cursed by a bug where the center square of Rabat didn't exist / was not worked for the rest of the game... Upon getting it back at size 4 it had ZERO production for quite a lot of turns....
Tested out religion with the 100 gold per converted city. I had pretty much the whole map converted to my religion.
I went Order.
Really want to replay this to see how much better I could do without the early war. Maybe next try I wipe out France first.
Well, no improvement here for SV victories really. My early game felt a bit slow/nerfed, though my NC time was not bad at all. I just don't know the secret for how one can lower times to t200 or less. Barbs were kinda crazy this game, with camps seemingly popping up every other turn.
France and Mongolia DoW'd me on the same turn. I assume France bribed in Mongolia, as France seemed for more ready for war, having a nice little army of swordsman and archers marching on Fez and Rabat. I was "weak" up to the point of the double declaration but this was around a point where NC was up and I was just teching Construction. The archers I did have were a bit distracted up north with barb stuff, but I had started on archer to convert in Marrakech as Construction came in. So I had xbows up immediately and purchased one in Rabat. In addition, I had a couple of horsemen. France was dispatched rather painlessly. Mongolia barely sent units. I reversed the tide quickly, eventually taking Paris and Karakorum. KK had taken 2 city states early by this time of the 2xdow. (Honestly, early on the AIs were quite aggressive) Anyway, ofc, I liberated Sidon and the "M" one down S for besties forever. I remained at war with those two, bringing in others, for the rest of the game - well, until Carthage finally took Orleans to end Napster. Japan never came for Mongolia and, as usual, I could never bribe in Willie.
3-city NC and then settled 2 more cities, plus Paris and Kara. Are 7 cities vs. say 4 or 5, helpful at all - I don't know. I bought all the research buildings in every city.
I settled in a SW diagonal first, actually settling Rabat (2nd city) farther away to nab the geyser, not for the tile itself, but the extra early happiness. Rabat would become my Petra city - very good for that, while Mara focused on other critical things. Rabat built a lot of wonders. Fez was a nice food city for the guilds, but it was low on production until the kasbahs. As you can see in my end shots, Mara was not really all that big relatively. I think a big mistake was waiting on kasbahs instead of building some farms there.
Lastly, I need to get better on the endgame bulbing. It probably would have only shaved a few turns this game, but I'm generally too lazy to do all the calcs. With the tremendous amount of faith and 7 cities producing GSs, I had plenty of them. I used two at earlier stages to reach the key eras and buildings, and saved most for the late-game rush. But it wasn't terrible either. I find that basically one can know when you can just bulb out the end game and have all the parts done in like 2 turns.
I think it is the mid-game somewhere that I am missing something. Not focusing more growth in Mara early hurt me this game, but there is a bigger issue here that I've not figured out.
Freedom. I have never really leveraged Order for space. ( I almost forgot to really start saving gold late, but ended up with just enough for parts)
Oh, I took me a long time to get DoF with Sweden as much as I focused on it. I was able to free 2 of his settlers from camps, and eventually he realized that I had his best interest at heart, which was my interest ..ha. I never really analyzed how effective his UA is for his friends, but I did produce a lot of great people.
I was friends with Willie early, then he got miffed as usual, but came back late game. Carthage and Arabia were friends most of the game, as was Sweden eventually. Japan did nothing, but gave me no trouble either. I think I got 2 research agreements in the whole game.
That's a bug and there is a solution for it: never accept a peace deal with an AI on their turn (their initiative), only accept peace deal with AI on your turn (your initiative). Just turn down the peace deal they offer and offer it yourself.
I've had the same bug a bunch of GOTM ago and it indeed cripples small cities.

Usually it is exactly as you say, but recently I took a city in a peace deal on *my* turn and got the same bug. The city just stayed at 4 pop forever and never amounted to much.
