TSG10 After Action Report

Anyway, thanks again for putting this together. I always enjoy struggling through to victory only to find that the rest of the world is getting there in half the time...:D
You're welcome. :)

FYI--I had two restarts from crashes somewhere in the early 200's I think but, once again, I'm not winning any medals here so I don't think anyone cares....
:thanx: for letting us know.

My strategy was almost the same as Airey except I had a different approach to the SPs.

First I went for Liberty to get to free GP with the intention of getting a GE to build the GL. But this failed when Siam build the GL just before I was ready to insta build it! Grrr. Punished Siam for this by conquering it with 2 swordsmen and a warrior.

After this I went for Piety to avoid going too much into the red with happiness. But the AI had far fewer cities than normally (probably due to raging barbs) and never offered cities in the peace, so I didn't puppet as many cities as normal and was in positive happiness all game.

The map was not making this easy and I used most of the time just pushing out Longswords and Horsemen and navigating the map. Astronomy came a little late and I think that if I had focused on Patronage (instead of Piety) for Scholasicm (to get science from CS) I would have been able to shave off maybe 5 to 10 turns, but had the map been more pangea-like then it would have been a waste. Oh well.

It went as well for me as it did for Saddam Hussein.

Had to take Athens before UN was built. Or before Alex got the space. Or before he decided it was time to wipe me off the map.

Anyhow... no units survived... Athens barely scratched. Submit retired game.

I did not want to continue after this. But I did want to try different tactics. with my second attempt... diferent tactics, same result. (Actually, this time, Alex DOW's me as I take the CS's next to athens in prep for the assault... hopefully with nukes by then. But Alex is not as stupid as he seems, I guess. :p

This was a frustrating game for me.

My third domination game and first in months. I had a few ideas but was too unfocused to bring anything together well. Worst of all my initial explorers all got killed by barbs and I didn't meet anyone but Siam until turn 140ish which ment no RAs that mattered (Siam never had the money and once again I forgot to loan some). Self reasearched astronomy and rifling took a long time. I did remember to loan money for RAs to civs after I took their capitals, but really it was a waste of money because none of them delivered until after I had those important techs. Also no early trading partners meant I was cash poor for a long time so my army took longer to get together. I also made the mistake I think of focusing on developing my capital more than neccessary before building an army. I'm a builder at heart. Which also led to perhaps my biggest mistake -- I never built even a second army. There was always another building or wonder I wanted. It would have been easier I think if I had settled more than one city, but I didn't really like any of the other city spots and Rammy got the good iron spot early.

Once I finally had an army I easily took the other civs one by one just marching (and sailing) from one to another. Lost only 2 units I think. Chinese great generals rock. I must learn to make multiple armies and send them in different directions if I plan on domination.

I went for a Cho-Ko-Nu rush, but wasn’t able to get off an attack on Siam until turn 95, and I only had a couple CKNs. Siam had rexed and managed to kill a warrior so the war took me all the way to turn 119, when I left them with one city W of Beijing.

But then the Tiger Mother went on a roll- warred Gandhi on turn 132 and by turn 211 I had taken care of India, Russia, Mongolia (instead of attacking head on there I landed my army a bit down their peninsula and took a coastal city first), and Japan. This was also about when I got to upgrade my CKNs to Blitzing Riflemen.

A few Riflemen went to Persepolis, which was defended by Pikemen/Immortals and fell easily on turn 222. The rest staged in my new ally Cape Town, took a coastal city just south of Athens to help make way for Cannons, and then made the final push.

The game crashed in the late 220s, so I reloaded a turn 220 autosave and took Athens on turn 229.

VICTORY

Domination
Turn 139 (580ad)
Score 3040 (HOF) / 904 (in-game)

Restriction: no Research Agreements

Settled Beijing in place, where it grew to size 16 and built a huge amount of units. :mischief:

Funny to meet Belgrade before it had settled! We nearly got a free worker on turn one... However, our starting Warrior did very well by running past the barb camp east of Siam so it could explore what turned out to be the bulk of the continent, although it took ages to find the Japanese capital. And capitals were all we targeted, we didn't need the other AI towns. Persepolis was last, Persia played OCC and we were just two turns ahead of the Greek army that had vacated the area of Athens shortly before for our convenience - wise, since they were no match for our Longswordsmen :).

Didn't start moving forces until the barbs gave us a Great General.

Key in this game was good production from b-lining Stable and Workshop, plus fast enough teching to Astronomy. To accomplish that, we allied with city states and adopted Scholasticism.

Total noob here. Can no way do it in the time some of you guys are posting. I tried to follow your example Ribannah.

Spoiler :
How the hell did you get 310g to buy a worker by turn 19? I have tried working the gold tiles from the off and being the first to the 3 closest CS but still cant get anywhere near that amount

It seems that the AI on emperor can be beat really fast with only 1 or 2 cities. I should try more of these approaches next time. So much used to build at least 4 cities in mp games. Can't survive with only 1 or 2 cities.

I went full CKNs rush tho. I could go to war 20-25 turns earlier with LS.

Loans! We got 90 gold for 4 gpt from India, and 45 gold for 2 gpt from Siam.

While these deals may seem unfair at first glance, they're actually well worth it. :)

Lucky you, you have sent a unit before Siam blocked the way :)

On most maps I explore the boundaries first, and the interior later. Knowing the lay of the land is important for many reasons, while we don't need to know all the local resources until we're getting ready to expand.

Well, after HoF got screwed by dumb "exploite" rules I came back to this place and found I game which gave my funny yesterday afternoon.

After a LOT of sailing round I finaly ended this in turn 123 (score 2854).
Never played China before and fingured about its general overpower out only after fighting loads and loads of barbs (and city state hurhur) gave me one.
Otherwise I guess I d have picked gen sp 1.

Well my gameplan was very basic as in pretty much every watermap I tried to get as many RA agreements up as fast as possible (Siam teched Philo carzy fast in like turn 35) to get to Astro fast - 1 round of RA agreements + GL with merocrazy engi gave me astro in end. Ais cash wasnt great but OK - I settled 2 more cities while scouting home "continent" and final plan went up:
KILL :) as allways best (easy and cheap ...) with swords - this game supported by loads of pikes as I got to CS more early then Iron (GL..) ...
went for Siam soon after RA agreement was fullfilled - luckily it offered me its 3rd city for peace just 2 turns after I discovered that Iron was close to it - anexed and bought irontile.

As said I could afford buy some pikes as I sold most my lux to ais - my civ wasnt too happy most game ..

Well then it was obvious what to do - 1 army north 1 army south and scouts over water in all directions after astro - good thing barb ships cant kill you in ocean water :) - another good thing I could afford buy 2 Longswords aswell (let ais allive and espacially Russia was even affter loss of cap pretty cash loaded all game) - otherwise Athens strength 20 city d have been a pain in end ...

All other fights were pretty simple with this generalpower ..

ah edit: after reading through this thread I wonder why u guys had problems finding other civs on homeland - basicly there were 2 direction in start - ne and sw (found this nw thing only very late ..)- and 1 direction was "the right one" - also even after Siam settled 2nd city there d have been like 10 turns to slip trough the 2 cities - well sure if u dont meet other civs u r screwed and like 30 turns back ..

Hi,

I would like to hear more. Your savefile indicates some remarkable achievements. :)

- You have only a single Worker, presumably from adopting Citizenship on turn 25. Even so, you were still able to sell 2 Spices on turn 35, and you improved at least 22 tiles.
- To develop Spices, you needed to research Mining and Calendar. You were nonetheless able to sign a Research Agreement with Siam on turn 38, costing 250g rather than 200g.
- You had met all other civs on your continent, including Japan, on turn 42.
- Beijing is only size 4, and your other cities are size 1. You had one brief Golden Age, late, from Rationalism (all 3 Great Generals are still around), and 2000g less to play with due to the 4 RA's. But you have a vast military (4 x Longswordsman, 7 x Pikeman, 5 x Swordsman, 2 x Trireme, and perhaps there were some casualties, too).

Could you share with us you research path, and your build order in Beijing? Where did your exploring Warrior go? (My Warrior went all the way east until it saw the coast, before turning back.)

The problem wasn't so much Siam, I figure, but the barbarian camp east of the landbridge, which starts producing units very early on, too many for a single exploring Warrior to handle.

- my buildorder was: scout, worker, monument, warri, settler I think and I bought a scout as soon as I had 140gold I think
as for scouting - well as said after going on this hill which let u see ais settler (guess most went there - only hill close - I figured I needed scout 2 direction and as warri was ne alleady I just keept going there. Most civs meet me on this other subcontinent ....
Also I sent the bought scout over there after my warri discovered the landbrige and meet 1. civ (other scout was stuck between some barbs in corner..) aswell as the warri (warri went north and meet india and russia and scout meet japen in end

And to barbs well - I never ever fight barbs in like 1. 50 tuns of any game (only if they enter land) - so I just moved past it - barbs like take ai workers which makes some nice cs mission :) -I like barbs :)
also they got a attacking pattern u have to know - they usually never attack u the 1. turn they see u - u have take advantage of that and just move close to them even when u think u mioght die

As for gold - as soon as I had worked my lux I sold it to 1 civ (think mongolia), declared war and sold to another - mongolia wasnt happy - but I have been ...
some think that might be "lame" - well that way u r hanycaped by not beeing able to have a RA partner - so it got a tradeoff

For the cities sizes .. I let them starv in end to fight unhappyness - bejing had been grwoing fast in start (helps teching ..) and then size 6 for quite some time and other cities 2-3

And had a lot of workers - but disbanded some for gold and had 2 die to barbs ships (semiintended to save costs) which went scouting (former siams ones and city state)

After armies was formed and the lux were worked .. well workers are useless (same as scouts going into "the dark" - useless stuff gets disbanded ...

The armies were mainly bought and upgraded, I built lot of warries early on and even when some died (think 2 to siam and then 3 more) I still had 3 or so to upgrade. The longswrds killing Athen were bought (no no more big expenses after doing the RA agreement in like turn 50 and buying some pikes) - I had 1 ship aswell which I disbanded afetr I scouted all cost till ice in south ... (and killed like 10 barb ships while doing).
Trading with ai gives u more units as u could ever produce by hammers :)

oh and RA path - well very basic - minning-->calender-->philo and then all the prequisite techs for the astro RA agreeemnts techs and blocking (think sailing 1. for ships) - while RAs were going in i teched to iron and then straight on to steel, I had Iron later then I usually do, but with this early Siam RA agreemnt I had to be careful with blocking all and getting prequisits

Thanks. :)

As for gold - as soon as I had worked my lux I sold it to 1 civ (think mongolia), declared war and sold to another - mongolia wasnt happy - but I have been ...

It's called an exploit, which is indeed frowned upon and in this case saved you 10 turns on getting that fourth RA.

Going for early Pikemen was a good idea though. :goodjob:

All in all, I think that we have a good example here that signing a few Research Agreements beats over a hundred turns of building a strong economy.

I played this past weekend, well after the due date, but thread indicated that all results would be welcomed.

2300 score in game - defeat - Greece was winner, diplomatic.

I only lost because was going for Dominion victory, otherwise could have gotten a diplomatic easily. Only 3 left in game (Greece, Persia, me). I had largest army, and was a few turns from invading Athens. Greece was possibly a turn or 2 away from finishing Persia.

378 turns at end.
