Russia without horses - ouch! Lost in the 21st Century.

I think normally I'm a fairly good player at King level but I couldn't get anything going here. Happiness and gold were a struggle the whole game and I didn't have enough military early on. Cue Alexander invading with a horde of his UU. I fought back, took Novgorod back and then Corinth, but he kept warring me throughout the game and his final effort with landships was just too devastating for me to stop - I'd been neglecting military likely as I was trying to think how I could get gold going to somehow get into the world congress race, which I was never really in.

How useful was your UA?
Not very as there are few strategic resources around! My southwest city had a good bit of Iron but I suspect that's the reason Alexander invaded me the first time. I managed to build a few Cossacks as Corinth had horses when I finally took it from Greece after an epic war that took virtually all of the classic and medieval periods. But I didn't get enough use out of them and lacked the money to upgrade them to landships to keep them relevant when the game-ending invasion came.

Did you use spying to your advantage?
Yes, had one very levelled spy which was great. I belatedly figured out I needed to start using her for City State Coups to try and get back into the diplomatic game. So I used espionage a fair bit but should have done more.

Did the map type help or hinder victory and how?
Hinder - very little in the way of strategic resources around the capital to use Russia's unique ability. Congested area of city states north of the start and Alexander, who is a nightmare if you want to win diplomatically anwyay, the nearest neighbour to the south. Ouch!

How did the difficulty level affect your game decisions?
I felt confident at King so decided to try stuff I don't normally like opening Liberty, but it didn't really work at all.

What Social Policies did you choose and in what order? Which Ideology did you choose?
Liberty into Patronage. Had selected Order but ideological pressure forced me to switch to Autocracy before I'd even selected a tenet - part of my multi-faceted struggles where none of my outputs were really high enough to be in the running.

What techs did you prioritize ?
Tried to beeline for National College but about when I was building it was when I got the first invasion from Alexander so had to fight that off before I really benefitted. My knowledge of late game techs also isn't very good and this was shown up in the latter stages, although I wasn't going to win anyway so being wiped out by the Greeks just stopped me having to wait for someone else to win one of the other ways.

This was a hard one. Diplo victory on turn 430. One of the first things I did was declare war on Bucharest, when I saw that they were hostile and they had ivory. They wree already under protection from Babylon, but I hadn't met Nebuchadnezzar yet. I stole about 4 workers from them over the next 50 or 60, then eventually made peace. I settled my first expo right next to Babylon, and my second on top of the sugar or cotton or whatever it was close to Antwerp. Then I settled a Rostov on the west side of that big lake to grab some iron, and the first thing I built there was walls. Just as the walls were almost finished, Alex shows up with a huge army and declared war. I finished the walls and defended as best I could but he still captured the city. I was just finishing researching Construction, and I upgraded my archers (ones didn't get killed in the First Battle of Rostov) and built a few more composite bows and spears and a catapult (I didn't have any iron yet for swords.) I recaptured Rostov, finished the iron mine, and sparred with Greece until he was tired of fighting, and he offered me Sparta. (Sparta had no luxuries but I didn't know that yet; I thought it had furs) I took the deal, and my happiness tanked for a while but I got it under control again. Alex hated me after that; I knew I needed to keep a strong military there, and eventually he would have to die. (he died shortly after I researched Dynamite) I was actually somewhat friendly with Nebster in spite of settling right in his face, because I freed one of his captured workers. But eventually (atomic era) I killed him too because he had the Order ideology and quite a few great works, and I was getting way too much pressure (and disrespect) from all the Order civs. The pushed the world ideology thru and also embargoed the city states before I could do anything about it. He denounced me for no good reason, so he had to go. I let a city state capture his last city just out of spite.

The other parts of the world were ravaged by wars also. Austria and The Iroquois were top dogs, but The Inca were doing pretty well too. Everybody else was beated-down bad or dead. I avoided war with Hiawatha mostly because I didn't want him killing my city states. I may "just one more turn" and teach him a lesson. I will have to pace myself burning down all his crappy cities because Order is still the world ideology. (that will be Freedom soon enough.) Once I finally took control of the world congress, ending the CS embargo was more important that repealing the ideology

How useful was your UA?
I guess it was useful eventually; I didn't need nearly as many horses or iron. Wait, I forgot about the +1 production. That was very useful in getting Rostov back up and running after it was sacked.

Did you use spying to your advantage?
Yes, I leveled them up a bit as counterspies in Moscow, then sent them to city states. And at the very end I sent most of them out as diplomats to get enough votes; there were 2 city states that I could not get to to meet, and I had neither the world religion nor world ideology (also not the Forbidden Palace)

Did the map type help or hinder victory and how?
The map was awful, but I think ice age maps are always awful (I played a large ice age map first for practice) Very hard to explore without submarines because the ocean passages are blocked with ice.

How did the difficulty level affect your game decisions?
I usually play at emperor so I thought king would be easy. It wasn't.

What Social Policies did you choose and in what order? Which Ideology did you choose?
Honor opener, full Tradition, finished left side of Honor, Exploration opener and the extra production policy, Rationalism(5) , Freedom(6), Patronage(5). My next policy was going to be the Rationalism finisher to grab Internet.

What techs did you prioritize ?
Sailing, Animal Husbandry and Bronze to find horses and iron (there weren't any), Philosophy (mainly for temples because I needed to found a religion to keep my production from fishing boats pantheon), Astronomy, Scientific Theory, Dynamite, Plastics, Globalization.

What did you think of the map and settings?
No strategic resources (except eventually uranium) anywhere near the starting location. I did get some horses eventually; I stole them from Bucharest with a great general.

I tried to submit this GOTM 193, using the link from the first post in this thread, but I got this message:

Civ5 GOTM Submission Form

Civ5 GOTM 192 Entries are now CLOSED.

This submissions page will reopen for business when a new game is released.

Diplomatic victory, turn 306. Also, this is my first Civ5 diplomatic victory.

I made five cities on most productive locations between city states. Capital had no roads at all, so in times of war, city connections by sea were sometimes broken. I conquered Venice to stop them acquiring city/states, they have already took 2 of them. Because I had to make use of that army, I attacked Iroquois capital to capture wonders. They repelled my first trebuchet attack, but my second cannon attack succeeded. After that I made peace due to high unit losses. During that war, and after that, I was backstabbed by 7 AIs. My allied city-states were nice defense for my disconnected empire. I liberated 2 of my allied city-states which AIs conquered during those wars. After long and successful defense, and in some cases my counter-attack, I made peace with some of AIs, taking high war reparations from them. Some of them gave me 1 city for peace. I don't understand why Inca did it, because I hadn't invaded them. That peace mechanics in Civ5 is quite weird, AIs sometimes don't want to negotiate for too long time, sometimes don't want to give any ca$h for peace although they took much beating, and sometimes they suddenly decide to give city for peace. At first, I didn't wanted to take any Carthaginian cities, but Dido was too stubborn in refusing negotiations and I got much happiness due to city-states and policies, so my plans changed, and I took most of their cities by conquest and 2 for peace, leaving them only 1 city.
In the end, I had 22 allied city-states, because those 2 form Venice don't have liberate option, which secured my Diplomatic victory. Later wars of conquest were not needed for victory, they were just for fun, while waiting for World leader elections.

- How useful was your UA?
Almost negligible.

- Did you use spying to your advantage?
At first, I have put spies in some of city-states. When United Nations were close, I have sent them as diplomats to AI capitals, for Globalization voting bonus. I made no special spying actions.

- Did the map type help or hinder victory and how?
It helped me by crippling some of the AIs near frozen areas.

- How did the difficulty level affect your game decisions?
I could avoid having garrisons in border cities, comparing to higher levels.

- What Social Policies did you choose and in what order? Which Ideology did you choose?
At first, those policies which give culture per city, settler and worker. Later, those related to city-states and science. From ideologies, Order, because I like happiness and factory bonuses, and have already allied most of city-states by ca$h. Diplomatic policies in other ideologies are quite late anyway.

- What techs did you prioritize ?
Techs for scientific buildings.

- What did you think of the map and settings?
They were nice for this map size. On this map size, with more productive land, AIs would have more cities and units so their turns would be longer.

I'll attach the save I already submitted when I back home.

I really enjoyed this game, much more than I was expecting. Thanks very much!

I am not familiar with Ice Age map, so I knew that would be interesting for me. From the name, I was going to be happy with mediocre land. But I was not tempted to settle on Snow just to pick up a few Crab!

I gambled on the Great Library, which worked out, so built NC after that before my three expos. I went Liberty (Collective Rule before Citizenship) to get going fast after Great Library, but Tradition might have been better, as I only wanted three expos, and I missed Pyramids by a wide margin.

Initial BO was: Monument, Scout, Shrine, Scout, GLib, NC, Archer, Settler, Archer, Settler, Archer.

T048 Nebuchadnezzar had an unescorted Settler near me, so that was too tempting to pass. Later I would steer another settler to a barb camp. There were a couple other “rescues” from barb camps. I don't think I built any workers, even with missing Pyramids.

T060 I finally got a pantheon. Dance of the Auroras was long gone, so I took Goddess of Festivals. If I had thought a bit longer, I would have taken OWN. But that mistake turned out all for the better. (1) I did eventually found (T132); and (2) OWN would have tempted me to settle far-away expos. There were a couple or three good ones that went unclaimed most of the game. I used Liberty GE for Hagia Sophia (T156) , another World Wonder that I never see in my Deity games!

T125 Alexander is on my borders and I have very few units, just the three Archers and starting Warrior. They were all trained up from barb hunting though. I could not bribe Alex away. I was worried, as he had his UU, but only a few of them. Mostly I was annoyed since I had planned to play all peaceful like. I gave him OB so he would DOW closer to Moscow, rather than starting on my weakest expo. That worked. He DOW’d me on T134 and took Rostov the next turn. Really it was barbs that saved Moscow, since Alex tried to come up from the south. It was a grind, but eventually I take Rostov back on T152.

Athens is hard to get at, so I decide to clear out the expos first. Only one is in a decent location. My assault on Sparta started T160; captured and razed T164. It had no building anyway. Argos fell T170. Genoa, who I allied along the way, captured and razed Corinth on T186, a turn before I could get there. It was the only expo spot I liked. I start on a couple more Settlers, so Liberty was good choice after all. I capture Athens, killing off Alex T192. Hardly got any grief, as only a few of the AI had met him. I used my spare GG to capture the Sugar N of Moscow, and settle in for the long game.

Some other milestones:

T199 Close out Patronage.
T201 Maria builds Forbidden Palace by 16 turns. I though that would really hurt, but not at all really. I still founded and lead the WC.
T216 I am gifted a Merchant of Venice which I use to buy out Milan. They were my ally, but picking up Mt. Kailash was sweet.
T233 I meet the last AI, then propose and win WF (T274).
T275 Close out Rationalism for Radio. I have not yet build Oxford.
T323 Propose and easily win IG (T336).
T344 Start bulbing GS and building Oxford.
T363 First WL vote in a turn, I have Globalism and three or four Diplomats. I buy out the few CS that are not my allies, and have plenty of gold left over.
T364 Dido flips one of my CS, but it is fine.
T365 Win Diplo VC.

All game I was looking for AI civs to get eliminated. Their vote at the end can be more valuable than diplomats! No luck! There were wars, but no runaways. Even Venice held all game. I did have a LOL moment ~330 (or so), trying to figure out why there were only 11 civs and not the promised 12…
How useful was your UA?
Not at all! It was quite disappointing not to have Horses. If I had resource multiples in the later game, I did not notice. I never build the UU. The UB is sweet, and the border expansion quite noticeable. I was happy to be playing Russia on this map. I would like to see an Ice Age Deity Diplomacy game, but with Sweden.
Did you use spying to your advantage?
No one to steal techs from, but my spy did level up via counter-espionage. One of the Militaristic CS was under contention, so that helped.
Did the map type help or hinder victory and how?
I thought the size was going to make things harder, but I won at the first WL vote, so I guess not. I think the larger size made my missing Forbidden Palace irrelevant, so that was a huge perk, as was the late WC start generally. Raging Barbs is always great too.
How did the difficulty level affect your game decisions?
I went for early game Wonders that I never usually bother with. It also caused me to underestimate my neighbor. That worked out really well though, as I needed Alex’s Furs for trade much more than my own Crabs.
What Social Policies did you choose and in what order? Which Ideology did you choose?
Three policies in Liberty, then started working on Patronage, to get the +20 CS resting point ASAP. Then I finished off Liberty and the rest of Patronage. That delayed my opening of Rationalism, but it worked out really well. I was first to Ideologies (by a wide margin) and opened Freedom. I was able to use the 3rd tier policy to lock all but two or three CS.
What techs did you prioritize?
After the first early four, I took Writing and then the one policy I needed to unlock Philosophy from Great Library. Then Construction and Iron Working, since I was at war with Alex. Electricity was the mid game early priority (as usual), then I started working on the first and top rows of the Tech Tree so I could bulb straight from Penicillin to Globalization.
What did you think of the map and settings?
Can’t say I would pick Ice Age often! It was not as bad as I was expecting. I miss ruins. Raging Barbarian is always a treat in my view. Lack of horses near the start was disappointing.

Diplo V T414.

I don't think I've ever dominated a game so thoroughly. Russia's UA is a lot better than I had thought. If you go on the attack and capture lots of cities you can have a ridiculous amount of resources. I had tons of Battleships and some bombers and fighters and still had 94 oil left over.

The early game did not go well though. The capital city location was awesome. But beyond that, the land was terrible. City States crowding around me. Babylon right there. Then I see Alex right next door. I was dismayed when I saw no horses (but later realized that Cossacks come so late that you don't need early horses). Then all the iron was nowhere near a luxury. I almost rage quit when Portugal plopped a city right in the best expo spot I found - and she came halfway across the continent to do it, bypassing a couple of good spots near her.

I knew I had to eliminate Greece. But I knew I couldn't do it early because of his UU's. And I didn't want to build any cities toward him because there were no luxes there and Moscow was in a good defensible location. So I decided to do a one city NC; I didn't build my first expo until T90. That was up by the Sugar near Babylon; and I had to block his settler to stop him from taking it.

Alex attacked with his UU's around T130 but I fought him off with CB and Spearmen easily - the rough terrain and that lake made Moscow completely safe. I stayed at war with him and farmed his units for XP. When I got XB and Pikemen I attacked. His first city fell T173. And I eliminated him T210.

Spoiler Had to include this because its a sad Alexander :
Sad Alex.jpg

I was right across a narrow sea from Austria, another threat to a Diplo Victory. So I just decided to keep going. I attacked austria T250 and she was gone by T270. T305 I attacked Arabia because he was being a punk and wiped him from my part of the continent on T315.

Then around T325 half the world DoW'd me. I was at war with Morocco, The Iroquois, Venice and The Inca. But that was ok because Russia's UA is so awesome; after taking out Greece, I built two new cities to get the Iron. And seeing all that water and coastal capitals I built a ton of Frigates.

Spoiler Frigate attack on Casablanca :

I wanted to take Morocco's capital because it had lots of Wonders including the Forbidden Palace. How nice of him to DoW me. T335 I took a strategically located Iroquois city then launched my attack on Morocco. T360 I had Marrakech. By that time I had upgraded my Frigates to Battleships. They took down Marrakech in one turn.

Spoiler Battleships attack Marrakech :

By the end of the game I had all the city states left in the game. And won the World Leader on the first Vote with 59 delegates.

- How useful was your UA?
I find it interesting that most others said the UA wasn't very useful. I found it incredibly useful. I guess that's because I decided to use it to go to war, I had so many resources I couldn't build enough units to use them all. If playing peaceful I guess its not as good.

- Did you use spying to your advantage?
Not to steal techs but to influence city states.

- Did the map type help or hinder victory and how?
I hated it at first but then later it helped. It seemed like it was a Fractal map, which I love, and it allowed me to dominate the seas.

- How did the difficulty level affect your game decisions?
I almost totally neglected science because it was only King. I didn't pick Rationalism until late in the game when there was nothing else to pick. I think I may have had a couple of GS the whole game.

- What Social Policies did you choose and in what order? Which Ideology did you choose?
I did full Tradition and full Patronage. A couple fillers in Commerce then went Autocracy. I learned two new things about Autocracy this game: Futurism and Gunboat Diplomacy are amazing. Futurism doesn't sound too good at first but I read a discussion about it in a CivFanatics post so I gave it a try. 250 tourism to all civs that early in the game is a lot. When my first Artist popped after taking it I was instantly Exotic with 3/4 of the world; I only had around 25 tourism at the time so that one Artist was worth 100 turns of tourism! I was the only one to take Autocracy and I had no happiness worries the rest of the game. And with Gunboat Diplomacy, since I was #1 or 2 in military, all the city states were afraid of me. I ended up with over 700 influence with some of them.

- What techs did you prioritize ?
When I saw all that iron I went straight for Frigates after getting Xbows and Pikemen; then with all the oil, went straight for Battleships. Didn't even bother with the normal science techs.

- What did you think of the map and settings?
The map itself turned out to be awesome. I think that had more to do with it being Fractal like than Ice Age. I'm not even sure what Ice Age does.

T349 Diplo win.

I settled in place, and went for Liberty as I figured on a huge map there should be lots of juicy city spots. Much to my dismay when I found out there were almost no luxuries available.

Alex to the west looked like a threat, so I decided to settle two cities toward him (one on the west end of the lake, the other between the mountain and natural wonder). He already had several Hoplites when I first met him, so I quietly built 4 comp. bows and 2 spearman and then took his capital. There was almost no resistance. I didn't want to wipe him out to maintain good relationships with the rest of the world though, so I got another expo of his in a peace deal, which I razed. Got him down to one city and he wasn't a threat for the rest of the game.

Meanwhile, the Babylonians had settled a city next to the sugar north of Moscow, so instead of letting my army sit idly I decided to take that city and integrate it into our empire. The hills and swamplands around the city didn't prove helpful though. Nebuchadnezzar had several comp. bows defending effectively while my troops were bogged down in the terrain. I called off the attack when it was clear that it wasn't going to be successful. I was going to let the war peter itself out when Nebu surprisingly offered me the sugar city in a peace deal :)

The rest of the game I was peaceful, maintaining good relations with my rivals and making loads of money from our plentiful iron and other ressources such as aluminium. I settled a late city on the southeastern tip of the continent, with 3 crabs and 2 aluminium. I even discovered a policy in the Autocracy tree that I wasn't aware of before, that doubles the quantity of all strategic ressources. Iron was effectively quadrupled with Catherine's unique trait!

Gunboat diplomacy was also quite effective, but by the time it became available I was already allied with most of the city states anyway. I had lots of gold and happiness, but my bottleneck was science even though I beelined towards the science buildings mainly. I did make a major blunder though when I took a detour towards fertilizer, only to later discover it wasn't really necessary. Skipping fertilizer would have saved me from sitting out a 20-turn voting cycle, so had I not made that mistake I might have finished in t329.
