I remember that applying in Civ IV but didn't realize it also worked in Civ V. Do you have details on exactly how the mechanism works? Thanks.

I don't have the exact formula. It's not as significant as in Civ4, but still. The cost of Pottery went down from 38 to 34 beakers after we met the other civs on our continent.
