TSG54 After Action Report

Yes, you can pick a 2nd GS the 2nd time through, but you can't pick a 3rd, because you can only ever pick 1 of a type per cycle.

Cycle 1: GS, GE, GM, HP, GArt, GAdm, GG.
Cycle 2: GS, GE, GM, HP, GArt, GAdm, GG.
Cycle 3: GS, etc, etc.

You can't take a 3rd GS until the 3 cycle. The rule of only one per long count cycle doesn't suddenly go away once you've completed the first long count.

have you tested it or are you just assuming? because browd sounds like he knows for certain.

I know for certain, because I'vegone into the 2nd cycle several times where I was able to pick at least 2 great people. Whichever one I picked first I could not pick again in the 2nd cycle.

Game: Civ5 GOTM 54
Date submitted: 2013-03-01
Your name: Owean
Game status: Science Victory
Game date: 1834AD
Turns played: 287
Base score: 1076
Final score: 1887
Time played: 4:09:00

My first GOTM submission (did TSG55 recently, but kinda cheated by reading through the threads lol).

Start was terrible, lost only scout to barbs, so missed out on ruins, gold opportunities etc. built two cities before NC, settled two more after and quite late. Happiness was very low around the time I completed tradition tree. Building a few wonders helped with happiness, plus I got decent gold income. Culture was also good because of city states.

Had no wars at all, had I got a better start, prob woulda attacked a few cities.

Completed Apollo Program around t250, messing up the tech order cost me some turns getting the tech needed for rocket parts. Well got an okay time, I guess considering the bad start.

My first GOTM submission.
Welcome to CivFanatics and GOTM. :salute:

Congrats on your win and best of luck in future.

Thanks for not submitting TSG55. :goodjob:

learned the hard way that in order to get the t62 great person from the mayan long count you need to get to theology by t60, not t61, as i did! youch.
played it out anyway, and followed up with some more sub-optimal play, settling slowly, and deciding to try to play peaceful with China while abusing all other AIs. didn't work out well. only got two RAs with China, the last one not worth anything since we weren't friends anymore by the time the 30 turns were up. shoulda just abused her too. Oh well, next time! I took out Madrid and London fairly early. held off on take Carthage because of her friendship with China, plus I kinda felt sorry for her really inept play. :)
In the end I also took out Constantinople, but it didn't really impact my finish time. Also misplayed the endgame (again!) with way too many techs. I thought I was going to be short GSs, but it turned out I should have burned some earlier for rocketry or some such techs.
Fun game, thanks Leif!

OK, looks like you need save files to convince you.

Didn't have any old Maya saves at the right turns, so I fired up this GOTM again and started fresh. (Other than beelining Theology, didn't play seriously -- mostly wanted to make sure the game was still live at turn 234!)

Finished Theology on Turn 56, so first GP was taken on turn 62 (GS - academy). Rest of the initial cycle was t.72 (Engineer - rush-build Hagia Sophia - use GP to enhance), t.86 (Prophet - spread religion), t.101 (Merchant - trade mission to Kuala Lumpur), t.117 (Artist - landmark), t.133 (GAdm - explore for missing CSs), and t.152 (GG). First cycle complete on t.152.

On Turn 183, had option to select any GP and took GS. On Turn 234, had option to select any GP and took another GS. Was able to take two straight GSs after finishing the initial cycle - total 3 GPs from the Mayan Long-Count.

Attached are 3 save files - Turn 152 (so you can see the first cycle finish), Turn 183 (first GP post-cycle) and Turn 234 (second GP post-cycle).

t243

my endgame always stagnates my time,

beelined plastics before t184, but only finished apollo around 210, and always still have to wait for the last tech for the SSpart (the top one)

Can't tell, but it looks like Firaxis may be patching this out today. From the 2K forum: http://forums.2kgames.com/showthread.php?216846-New-Patch-enroute-tomorrow

One patch note item is "Fixed the bug where the Maya AI didn't have to pick a different GP for each Baktun" This only refers to the Mayan AI, so perhaps there was a different bug -- AI could pick the same GP every time? So maybe this won't change the human player's ability to take the same GP after finishing the first Long-Count cycle. Will have to test this after the patch is installed.

My real first GOTM that I really tried to complete. But I suffered a lot of game crashes mid-game when I changed the turn and a Leader screen wanted to pop-up. Until I've got the habit to quicksave before end every turn I had to reload and replay the same 3/4 turns for more than an hour. Right in the heat of a battle. So many moves to remake. At least I tried new tatic things and learned something.

Still sometimes the game got going and I forgot to quicksave just to hit me hard again. Until I could read an error message that told it was something with the new driver, maybe NVIDA or DirectX 11. I then started playing with the DirectX 9. Worked well until....

The game was nice, I had not a lot of idea of how to go in the science tree, how to balance military x the rest and so on. After 100 or so, Britain declared war on me, I managed to just hold on withouth loosing any citie.

Then Dido also declared war, I managed to make peace with England and could focus on Dido. Got a nice peace treaty from her.

Then I had a nice army after building all those units to defend myself and Britain offered me to go togheter agains Spain. I took that offer. But to no avail. She made peace after sometime aswell.

Then Britain declared war on Dido, I joined in. We raised their towns.

Then I attacked Britain. Had a really really hard time to conquer Nottingham. Had to build 5 canons and go with all the armies at once. Was advancing very slow after that, but I was going to make it if I didn't stop building units.

Then Spain allied with China (wich was huge with a lot of cities) against me and I raged quit. :goodjob:

Welcome to GOTM. :wavey:

Sorry you had so much trouble. You can use the autosave feature of the game and set that to 1 turn and that should save you from having to quick save each turn. We strongly suggest using the autosave, set to 1 turn, feature so if you have a crash, you only need replay the current turn.

Good luck in future.

Oh, nice, I didn't know that you could change how often the game was autosaved. Mine was at the standart every 10 turns.

Didn't get around to submitting as didn't get as much time as I hoped to finish the game in time, but have finished it now! Science victory 334 turns, unimpresive but was my first game on emperor so not too disappointed.

With the Mayans it was a bit more difficult than with other civs, as their calendar makes it a bit more difficult. You can get one extra Scientist, if you really beeline Theology, but otherwise, I really found them difficult for generating GPs. I didn't really care about the General (I don't do wars), the Admiral (oh... there's the pirate boat... there's... oh, no more Admiral), the Merchant (although it's nice to have extra cash in the pocket) or the Artist, although I do find it great to get a quick Engineer for some wonder I usually skip due to AIs.

I can do you one better. The GA ending up in a pond when my capital is not on an open-sea coast

The Generals are useful for annexing some luxury or resource you don't have yet that's just beyond your border.
