Accidentally bought too many missionaries and only had enough faith for one engineer and one scientist
Leaning Tower -> Engineer - > Hubble
Faith Engineer -> Hurried last part
Units:
Land army
Two scouts became Sarchers (tribute collection from nearby CSes)
Third scout blocked pascal from expanding east
Initial warrior was sitting on the hill near Shaka and was converting his settlers into productive workers of my empire (about 5)
Did not build any workers, bought the first one with trubute money, Shaka contributed 5, got one from Rome and nearby CS
build one more archer and a catapult
As soon as I get machinery and physics, my land army went to capture Shaka and Pascal capitals (the only cities they had)
A few turns after that, two galleas and five Naus went to capture Rome (lost one gallea during attack)
After that I got three Naus in the easter sea and two Naus (joined later by one more) in the western sea collecting tributes every 15 turns or so
Became Friends with Hiawatha and Pedro. Got one RA going around the time I hit industrial.
Bought one university, hard build all other universities. Everything else was bought
My top three cities were 29, 21, 20 population each. Each of my cities besides the landlocked one was getting a trade ship.
Ulundi was getting a caravan.

Back to Civ after a long hiatus, this was a good GOTM to start with. Lot of learnin' goin' on....
Not sure what all people might like to see here so I'll limit myself to the questions in the OP.
- How many cities did you build and how many did you decide to acquire?
Decided to keep it simple with "tall and wall" so only built a total of four cities. Ended up with three additional puppets from war reparations.
- How did you use religion or spying to your advantage?
Made of use of religion to improve growth rates and gold income. Also (hopefully) it made relations with Shaka and Caesar easier since they both succumbed to the glory of Whiskey-O! Managed to avoid open conflict with both of them. Spying basically kept me somewhat clued in as to what other civs were up to - I usually shared intrigues with the affected civs in order to sweeten relationships....and maybe to keep things stirred up a little.
- How did diplomacy go with your neighbors?
Went well. I pretty much clinched up when I found both Caesar and Shaka on my borders but I was able to maintain amicable relations. I maintained a strong military - maybe stronger than I needed - and gave Shaka some small bribes now and then.
- How did the difficulty level affect your game decisions?
Well, first off the level encouraged me to get back into the GOTM swing - it has been a long time. Secondly, it made me pretty sure I could swing the Great Library/National College route (built GL t45, NC t57, helped along by popping a ruin for Calendar on t22).
- Did the Diplomacy Victory condition exclusion change how you play a science game?
Since I haven't played a DV game yet - no. I was glad I didn't have to worry about accidentally getting a DV, though.
While a flood of Great Scientists ran us through the ages, the most interesting part was perhaps the World Congress. We proposed the World's Fair, it passed, and we built about 75% of its 2800 hammers, at which time it was completed. It gave us all three awards. That probably wasn't good for anything, but it helped us pass the time.
Two more cities were founded, when we had the happiness for them: in the jungle and on the island east. That was fortunate, because it turned out to have Aluminum.
Cargo Ships (the Caravan was disbaned after one tour) brought food to cities that needed them, and hammers to the new additions. Even so, our income grew to 400gpt.
In the end, everything went faster than expected. We delayed the completion of Hubble and Porcelain Tower to allow for as many naturally born GS's as possible. More were coming, but they weren't needed.

hi gotm, first time submitting and first science victory in BNW
-did 6 cities of my own, after NC in cap with some liberty settlers and acquired the rest of the continent, rip shaka, pacal and augustus
-religion was a bit neglected, only got one GP; enough to buy 1GS though lategame. spies were used for culture and maritime cs's
-diplo wise I was much cooler with the guys on the other continent shaka was blocked as soon as I met him, did not want his settlers wandering around that beautiful empty western part of the continent.. pacal was being a d, augustus usually ends up beaten on these lower diffs
-warlord is quite strange, i missed the oracle(one turn, pacal) just timed with the rationalism natural opener a bit late to leave it though anyway
-diplo vc off was negligible i guess
Spoiler:
cuture ruin t1 opened trad, full liberty after that
rationalism full
freedom 3 tenets
tradition finish (might have got aristocracy earlier, though)
i really dont know how Singapore went around that alu tile, had to get pacal's third city chitzen iza down south and settled a GG on the unmined forest hill with 8 alu.
congrats on those sub 250 victories guys/girls, i seemed to be on route but err, somewhere after plastics the tech cost was still way too high
p.s. is there somewhere post game to check the exact turns(builds and techs) or is pedant notes the way to do it?? i had edu t113 and astrot129, but after that who knows.. salute

I was thinking the same thing whilst playing, like why are these cities costing my tech path instead of improving.. ended up annexing the ones with healthy pop and uni's then buying the schools and labs; unsure if this helped
Just discovered Game of the Month the other day. And must say that I'm very found of the concept, of what if seen of it so far. To share and discuss the same games must help does who want improving their games.
So instead of jumping stright to the newest challange I went back abit first to try out several of the GotM for this expansion. Had never tried Warlord before this so I didnt know quite what to expect, other then beeing able to steamrole major.
Had a good run till halfway through I think. Had a 4 city NC by turn 93 and was working myway through the tech-tree.
Took out Rome with my first Frigate in place - but I didnt know(!) that ships could take cities(!) so my fleet where parked outside waiting for some soldiers to march down.. Also this game was the first time ever I demanded tribute from the CS, will be doing that more.
I decided to then take it easy, focusing on my 4 originale cities + Rome. And on building almost all of the wonders except the war-related ones.
My religion went crazy, with missionaries and GP from wonders it was suddenly all over the island. Where pumping out 100+ faith pretty early, this helped me bunk up enough GS and GE for bubling and building in the end. But somewhere I lost track of things and the time passed by. I was pretty sure that under 300 turns would go easy. Along the way I at some point found my capital having 7 unemployed citizens.. and in the end I had misplaced a couple of GS so I didnt see them till the end. Ended up building the spaceship parts with just one tech left.. went major sloppy at the end. Victory at turn 317 is nothing to write home about. Considering playing the last 25 turns or so one more time to see how much I loosed there in the end.. Found it hard to stay focused after turn 100 or so...
Also got a question, and I might as well ask here: when you save up for bubling GS after rocketry(?), do you bubl when your researching something taking 6 turns+ or do you just use them all at the same time??
Also made a totally powerhouse of a city out in the desert to the east. With Petra and Desert Folklore it quick became my favorite city. Built Ironworks there and sent in food from all other cities.
