TSG79 After Actions

Did a defensive Four city Tradition, Aesthetics, Rationalism, Exploration Opener, and Freedom game.
Still learning a lot about the tourism mechanics. I didn't realize before that the amount of tourism generated by an musician in a concert is 10 times your tourism output at the time of his birth. Makes sense then to create works with the earlier musicians, and maybe delay a bit some of the later ones, till after hotels.
Poland was a big pain and distraction for me all game, and Brazil was a culture runaway.
Reading some of the other posts here, I realize that I should have managed the politics in the game better, and bribed Shaka to keep Brazil busy, and bribed Poland to go after somebody else.
I am very impressed and inspired with Ironfighter's and tommynt's fast finishes.
Maybe I'll try this one again!
Fun game thanks H.R.!

won this t187 ... Fully peaceful 4 city tradition. ....

Really??? tommynt "Fully Peaceful"? how is that possible? ;)

stole obviously some workers, 1 from ethopia, 1 or 2 from poland 2 from CS.

Wasnt great for my early reputation.

Oh, OK, so except for some DoWs to steal 4 or 5 workers, it was "Fully Peaceful"!
No enemy cities stolen. So, "No Harm, No Foul." then! ;)

Turn 262 CV.

4-city Tradition, then Aesthetics, and 2 in Rationalism (to Secularism), before taking Freedom. Mismanaged happiness in the mid-game, so growth was stunted (only got to about 34 pop in Paris) and some timings were off (don't play many culture games), but all turned out OK.

No wars, except early on (when I stole 6 settlers from Poland  -- he never really recovered, poor guy, although he did eventually eliminate Indonesia) and a double DOW at the end of the game. Would have finished 20+ turns earlier, but Shoshone and Russia both took Autocracy and then DOWed me on the turn I put diplomats in their capitals, which canceled open borders and trade routes and ejected the diplomats. Took International Games and a few musicians to finish them off.

286 cv for me..
settled three additional cities.. east and south early on then a spot to the north was still free so i took that one rather late.. i didnt have any problems with poland at all until he took autocracy and i took freedom.. brazil and i forced russia from order to freedom (achievement) and krakow revolted into my posession.. this was a bit scary as it was right in the heart of his lands between three cities and right after he denounced me.. i figured for sure he'd dow me but he didnt.. my army was very weak as well.. 4 crossbows and 3 muskets.. i only bribed him to go to war twice but even then he wasnt threatening me.. i simply preferred him to be occupied to the west..

1 city NC after petra.. then beelined architecture but missed uffizi by one turn so my science was pretty awful for most of the time.. stole a bunch of techs undetected from brazil that kept me in the game.. still got most of the tourism wonders to get the bonuses rocking..

learned a bit about culture.. mis-bought one musician way too early which was really dumb..
culture is now my least favorite vc.. too much prep.. not much in the way of go with the flow see how it works out before you decide how to win..

Finally, I won. :)

35 turn of war and 20 turn clicking on «next turn». Thanks to Autocracy - Cult of Personality and Rocket artillery. I went to war against Pedro with Poland. And after to Russia together with Poland. And Declare war against Indonesia with Pocatello.
It helped me to be dominant over Shoshones and Poland. I wiped Pedro for his Rio-full-wonder-capital. Casimir wiped Zulus, Pocatello Indonesia.
Russia razed Lyon. But, I have enough tourism with Internet andRio to be dominant.

I could win T330 if Indonesia wasn't so far and if I was more clever to send early Musicians to its land. Also Poland rot me to the end, enacting embargo against Indonesia. It forbid me trade route and, of course, open borders.

In the bad beat run, I missed International games under Internet for 300 hammers. I forgot to set Rio and Sao Paulo to the world project.

Definitely a lesson.

No picture. I still have black screen with print screen and paint with windows 8.

Well, I wasn't expecting to win this one after only playing for a month or so on lower difficulties and I didn't! I abandoned the game after Poland DoW'ed me and ground my units away faster than I could replace them over the course of 20 turns or so.

I did restart the game like 6 times, most of them ending with a DoW from Poland, and finally managed a win on turn 331, although even that one doesn't really count: I reloaded one turn where I failed to notice that a solo winged hussar was going to cap Paris with some help from bomber assaults. I did learn quite a lot from this game though, thanks to all the comments here which I read after my first failure, first and foremost of which is make your cap as big as possible as fast as possible!

The diplomacy in this game is still largely a mystery to me, coming from Civ 4 where you can see a number that tells you how much they like or hate you. Here I have one green mod and 4 red mods in diplo, and the AI is friendly; other times it might be the reverse and he is hostile. And sometimes they DoW you without warning after making a DoF 10 turns prior. Any good tips or links on how to predict/manipulate the diplo better?

Look at each AIs flavor for "deception" (meaning that they won't act as they really feel); for example Atilla is one to kill you off guard after being nice and friendly, while on the other hand Shaka wears his heart on his sleeve.
So usually, as far as diplomacy goes, try to get at least +2 (two more bright green mods than red mods) to stay safe with everyone.

As for DoW'ing a friend, AIs can bribe each other against you one time per game (so be careful about your military), and also look for "loyalty" in each leader. Monty is one not to be trusted for example while Genghis will most likely be loyal until at least your friendship expires.

Total failure on this one. I had much trouble with Poland expanding way too fast. I built Petra in Paris. Culture was going slow and I was too low in tech. Poland had a gigantic army. When he finished Indonesia, he and Zulu DOWed on me on the same turn, soon followed by Russia. I guess I had too few units. Zulu and Russia were not a real issue. I thought I could cope with Poland thanks to my castle, but I got overthrown by more than 10 polish units. I lost Paris in 1200 and that was game over for me.

Awesome fun game for me, really a challenge. Only settled 1 city (Orleans next to the mountain south), got HG and turn 78 Petra for Paris (proud of that!), later conquered Brasil and Ethiopia. All of that was fine, except that Poland kept attacking me the whole time and was also ally of almost all city states, so they all hated me. A tough moment when Zulu declared war and suddenly I was on the other end of the scary fighting prowess of their armies (luckily already riflemen and no impi).

Maybe it wasa bad idea to attack Brasil, but I felt that with their huge culture generation, it wouldtake me ages to become influential... problem was it meant I had to fight on two fronts and lost a lot of time and resources keeping Poland and its CS allies at bay.

My most fun game to boot, though, was great! :-)

Note: Game crashed a lot of times, loaded from autosaves. Played the same way where applied (mostly was at start of turn though, so no repeats necessary).

Note 2: Chateaus are quite nice, I didn't expect to use the defensive bonus, but in fact that ended up very useful.

Note 3: Poland returned Indonesia into the game 12 turn before I was going to get influential with all civs... delayed victory by some 6 turns. Various pointless mistakes delayed for at least another 10. But atm that's the limit of my abilities.

Russia won with a Space Race victory, but I was somehow able to keep all of my cities until the end. Poland tried hard to take them at the end by using nukes, but my defensive pacts with Russia and the Zulus helped hold them off (the Zulus nuked Poland).

It's been a while since I played Civ, and this was my first BNW game, so I'm rusty to say the least. I'm going to have to pull up some of the past GOTM files and practice, and I'm looking forward to the next month's.

The game has changed significantly enough to relearn some of it. Diplo, Culture, and Domination victory conditions were changed for BNW. Spies/DoF/DoW/Trading/Unique traits for certain civs were changed, lots of updated AI tactics, etc. I'm enjoying a fair portion of the changes so far.

Victory ~352. Fun game with stronghold Paris-Petra & Desert Folklore. Paris ended up with a pop of 38, and with the most wonders I've ever built on Immortal.

- OCC'ed Paris till HG, Petra, NC.
- Planted 2 cities, one south and one west
- DoWed Polen early, he moved settlers towards me. Took three. Ended in peace and he forward settled me major..
- Producion-Paris started pumping out wonders as if it where king lvl. Got everything I wanted; Sistine, LToP, Ufizi, Louvre etc.
- Sent Zulu after Brasil & Etiophia... both seized to exist. Making Zulu a powerhouse nation.
- Zulu & Polen jumped me early, just managed to pop 6 free Foreign Legion to save myself while they where at my doorstep. Miscalculated difficully level ;)
- They came back at turn ~250, took one of my cities each.. and had 20 units+ around Paris, cant see how I didnt loose it. Really have no idea how as I was sure to loose, somehow managed to block of units while they could have taken it and ended me. Zulu had at a time 15-20 frigates outside my coastal city.
- Somehow I ended up with Addis Ababa containg some wonders, and a russian city revolted to me. Got achivement from turning foreign city, and while talking achivement, snagged the Louvre one also.
- Had some delays after loosing cities, I kind of had to rebuild an army, all 8 trading routes etc. And couldnt get my science up to acceptable levels.
- Every nation besides Indonesia where CV-conquered somewhere between hotels and airports. Musician bombed Indonesia 4-5 times, but had to get Internet to finish em off as I started dropping influence pr turn at 88-89%. Didnt need national visitor center.
- Played around with theming bonuses to late... got a sudden tourism bump when I finally did.
- Went religion heavy with spreading it to 19 cities, making me a gold-machine with Tithe as founder.

- Went tradition -> Aesthetics -> Rationalism (finisher for Internet) -> Freedom and ended up filling Patronage altso. And opened Exploration for Louvre.

So after a few attempts followed by reading up on the masters' strategies in this thread, I managed to secure a Culture victory in T298.

Given it wasn't my first try at the map and I still had/chose to reload to avoid a Catherine+Casimir dogpile, I haven't uploaded the save. I'm still very new to playing on the harder difficulties (er, anything higher than King) but the main lesson I took was the importance of keeping Casimir busy! I continuously paid him off to war against anyone and everyone, while maintaining friendship agreements with his war targets. He grew considerably (although only knocking out Gaja) and led the score throughout the game but despite that one blip necessitating a reload, I managed to keep him stretched enough not to try any funny business with money bags France. I could probably have nibbled a few turns from the end by sending musicians earlier - it took them a while to get through and around Casimir's rampaging armies!

Thanks to the mods and other players for their tips in this very useful thread!

t212 CV, 4city tradition observatory

settled Paris next to the mountain south for observatory, expanded as quick as possible to all the lonely mountains and to victoria for maximum observatory

got all wonders except GL (Globe Theatre, Uffizi, Sistine, Louvre, Broadway), but didn't have enough art to fill them, maybe have to watch the GP-points timing better

POLICY: full tradition/full aestethics/exploration opener/freedom
RELIGION: df/tithe/plowshares/religious art/spreader
SCIENCE: education/astronomy/pp/sci. theory/archeology/refrigeration/radio
CONGRESS: world religion/world fair

Turn 307 Win. Could have been turn 240 if it wasn't for brazil.

I'll try to be short :

- Paris founded south next to moutain. Second city on desert river north, 3rd and last city east near south pole, on the coat grabbing lake victoria, 3 deers, the fish, and that tiny river next to mountains.
- Couple of early DOWs from Poland and the Russians slowed me by a bit, had to make troops and walls etc to survive.
- Planned 5 cities, but poland took the 4th spot (mountain coast left of the desert) and the russian took the 5th (coastal wheat gold deers east) so i only ended up with 3 cities.
- 3 cities all games, by mid game got control of diplomacy and was able to channel the AIs agression away from me
- Zulus got spanked by brazil, who managed to take their cities and become a culture / tourism run away.
- By the end brazil was so far ahead in culture that i had to declare war and completely annihilate him. Thanks to an insane amount of scientists, i jumped from cannons to bombers and paratroopers, still taking his cities was too slow for my taste.

**Any advice on making more musiciens at the end?** I needed about 5 to finish him, but i was only able to make 1 + 2 others from faith.

I think i made too many musiciens too early for creating artefacts, do you stop making musiciens at some point to make them easier to generate at the end? Tourism was easy to come by, but those musiciens bombs are what i missed to finish earlier.
