TSG85 Opening Action thread

I must be hallucinating, because i see 8 cities. :popcorn:

@Ribannah

nice liberty try. 8 cities... very impressive. and you could get maritime CSs, which are more efficient when you have more cities.

I have some questions for you:

1. Tradition opening and liberty: do you choose this tree even if you do not get early culture ruin?

2. You only built 2 scouts and no warrior/archer before t50. How did you protect 2-3 workers and 2 settlers against barbs?

3. For t102-t107 tech 1-turn spree, I assume that you delayed techs in order to maximize spt from external trade routes. it seems that you use three cargo ships and I guess they are all internal food cargos and 2 for cap (your cap pop is already 16 in t111 and mine was 16 at t124). How many incoming trades routes you had?

4. t100 GArtist: this one is liberty finisher and I wonder why you chose this. Isn't GE (to rush some wonders) or GProphet (if you want to do something with religion) better?

5. Except that I moved cap SW for mountain, my 4 city spots are identical to your city locations. Is there any reason that you did not move your initial settler toward mountain?

Nine cities, in total, actually. :)

The capital was settled in place because that location offers more natural growth, as you noticed.

I have played only a few BNW games and so far the Tradition opener + Liberty approach suits me best. Because I build a Monument in the capital I am not so dependent on an early culture ruins.

Barbarians didn't bother us much. Initially they couldn't see our Workers because of the forest and trekked past the capital towards Zurich. Later one Scout was kept close to home for protection, and the original Scout, upgraded to Archer, returned home after meeting the Shoshone.

I usually delay techs that I don't need right away on the chance that the AI discovers them first. With every AI that has already discovered a tech, the cost decreases.

Trade routes were indeed all food, the first one to Grand River and the other two to Onondaga.

I wasn't sure about the free Great Person. A Great Engineer or Great Scientist is basically a waste unless they can be spent on something right away, because this is a gain of only 100 points. A Great Prophet is the better choice but still only a gain of 300 faith and I didn't need it at that time either (all the good beliefs were already gone). Besides, the free Great Prophet counts as using up the first 100 Great Person points, too. So why not a Great Artist and generate Tourism right away? Every bit helps. :p

Micromanagement to max that's what I like - nice game Ribannnah, really hope you will finish it, I can 'smell' great result :)

This 'invisible' to others city is probably Brantford on one island tile.

Besides, the free Great Prophet counts as using up the first 100 Great Person points, too.
Are you sure, didn't know that, well after 1000+ hours in game still sth to learn :)

Prophets are alone in their own category. Faith has no relation with regular gpp.

@Ribannah: Keep it up milady! I like your sort of ''unusual'' paths they are very inspiring(and terrifying...from an AI point of view :))

While prophets in general are in their own category, the one from the liberty finisher increases the cost of great persons afaik.
Do you mean your next prophet will be 100 points more expensive? I don't understand what you are talking about since you say "great persono points" in general, while as far as i know, each great person pool is separate, except for engineers / scientists / merchants who share the same threshold...

A free Great Prophet from the Liberty tree is an exception to this rule and counts twice:

(a) the next Great Prophet costs more faith;
(b) the next Great Scientist, Great Engineer or Great Merchant costs 100 points more.

Not so free after all!

What you talk about is true in general but the liberty finisher is an exception, it increases both the prophet cost AND the Eng/Sci/Mer counter.

I would even guess that Pisa great prophet is the same.

This is why, if you insist on getting a Great Prophet from the Liberty finisher and if Hagia Sophia has not yet been built, you are better off taking a Great Engineer with the Liberty finisher and bulbing Hagia Sophia. For the same "costs" (cost of your next Great Prophet jumps to the next increment and the cost of your next GE/GM/GS rises by 100 GPP), you get your Great Prophet plus a free temple and Hagia Sophia's +3 faith (together, a "free" Stonehenge).

Sounds like a serious bug to me!

If popping normal prophets does NOT increase eng/sci/mer cost, i don't see why in hell a free one would!
