Nine cities, in total, actually.
The capital was settled in place because that location offers more natural growth, as you noticed.
I have played only a few BNW games and so far the Tradition opener + Liberty approach suits me best. Because I build a Monument in the capital I am not so dependent on an early culture ruins.
Barbarians didn't bother us much. Initially they couldn't see our Workers because of the forest and trekked past the capital towards Zurich. Later one Scout was kept close to home for protection, and the original Scout, upgraded to Archer, returned home after meeting the Shoshone.
I usually delay techs that I don't need right away on the chance that the AI discovers them first. With every AI that has already discovered a tech, the cost decreases.
Trade routes were indeed all food, the first one to Grand River and the other two to Onondaga.
I wasn't sure about the free Great Person. A Great Engineer or Great Scientist is basically a waste unless they can be spent on something right away, because this is a gain of only 100 points. A Great Prophet is the better choice but still only a gain of 300 faith and I didn't need it at that time either (all the good beliefs were already gone). Besides, the free Great Prophet counts as using up the first 100 Great Person points, too. So why not a Great Artist and generate Tourism right away? Every bit helps.
