How do I turn the wonder clips off? My game crashes to desktop with no error message for about half of all wonder films.

The root cause of the Movie problem is here:

The low res movies are not out yet, a guess, but probably with the next patch, they have done them. Until then tweeking the bink settings - or just turning the movies off - in the ini file may help

C:\Documents and Settings\New User\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\CivilizationIV.ini

ini file name can change from Country to Country, as long as its in that directory, go for it (best to use Notepad to edit)

If you post your dxdiag we can take a look to see if anything else maybe causing you the issue

So now I'm stuck again. I have a save just before I build the Taj Mahal, and the game crashes half of all the next turns.
I can get past that, since it's just a case of reloading until the game plays, but then I can't save. When I try to save, I get 'memory allocation failure: exiting game', and it crashes to desktop. Can anyone help me?
What's a dxdiag? How do I get it?
The link posted by Zydor doesn't work for me. It sends me to telefragged website.

Could you please post your dxdiag ?

Start Buttin - click - select Run - type dxdiag - press enter - wait a min - select "save all information" - note where you saved it - post the file as an attachment using the 'go advanced' button below

Sorry about the link above - fixed it

FX 5200 strikes again ...

A lot have surfaced since V1.52 came out. V1.52 placed a greater load on the graphics card to free up system RAM - they also did a lot more in the memory side of life than that which helps you. They included a switch in the ini file that turns on or off the shift of work onto the grahics card.

Look in the ini file (use notepad)
C:\Documents and Settings\New User\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\CivilizationIV.ini

Scroll down to "Memsaver" make sure its set at 0 (figure 0 not Letter O ). Set at 0 switches off the shift onto the card, set at 1 initiates the shift to the card (the latter saving main system RAM)

The reason you are getting the crash is the FX 5200, its not coping with the load placed on it - its marginal for the game. You really need to get a mid range card to replace it as you will have issues as time progresses, when more stuff is added on patches etc.

Meanwhile, all you can do is try and reduce the load on the card as much as you can. Lots of posts on reducing card load in the first 2 pages

wow! You know your stuff. Thanks for the speedy help.

btw, would there be much harm in re-installing the game and not using the patch? Would 'they' consider a patch for people with RAM and CPU but not good graphics cards?
I'd rather have the game run properly, mostly, and miss out on some of the fixes than have it crash every time I hit the modern era.

Go for it - you may get it to run - but keep expectations on the level. In theory it should run - but so many people are having problems with that card because its marginal for the game. Some may be lucky if the PC has been looked after and is an efficient setup. Its likely however that you will have to reduce as far as possible any load on the card and main system ram to give it as much room to work as you can. Lots of posts on reducing the load on the card and ram in the first coupleof pages of the forum.

The other aspect is that if you get it going - problem will not end there. As the game progresses more has to be processed (there is more to track by the beastie). Therefor it could go poof in the late game. So initially try the tiny - standard worlds (mega frustration for it to go bang with a "few" turns to go).

try to get a card if finance & the PC motherboard allow. Chat to the supplier / manufacturer, make sure you cover any heating issues re the card.

Re installing again - sure you can try it - but be aware that there were many issues post V1 that were not resolved until the V1.52 Patch came out - do not be surprised if you hit issues/unplayable. If you do with V1, all you can do is load V1.52, if that dont work - beg for a card ....

Need help - post again, someone will pick you up on the forum
