^ That's one of those movies that leaves an impression on everyone.
The 97 version had a stellar cast appear and should be watched just for that, but the black-n-white version hit's harder.

I think I saw the remake in high school, or at least part of it: I know I recognized Tony Danza. I missed Gandolfini, though: he wasn't on my radar until I started watching The Sopranoes in the mid 2000s.

There's also Armin Mueller-Stahl, who was in like 100 movies in the 90s. Probably most memorably in Shine.
Apparently he is still alive (at 94).

Tokyo Pop, 1988. Rom-com about an American woman who moves to Japan to hang out with a girlfriend, who's since skedaddled to Thailand. She develops a relationship with a Tokyo rock-n-roller, but she thinks their relationship and her career will be forever limited by her identity as a "gaijin", a foreigner. I watched it because ChatGPT reccommended it to me after a query of "Movies for people who like Japanese citypop". 1980s Citypop is a pet genre of mine.

Citypop music is the best...and it always reminds me of the first City Hunter anime intro

Tampopo, 1985. Two Japanese truckers are given refuge in a crappy ramen restaurant and the elder – who is fond of dressing like a cowboy – resolves to help the chef-owner Tampopo turn her ramen shop into a landmark with the Best Ramen in Japan. My cinema buddy and I ate ramen during this, but we did not have any pork with which to follow Sensei’s advice of talking to it and then prayerfully eating it. We just had hot sauce.

Where did you stream that?
