Two odd problems

1. when I try to play the 'earth' map, it loads what I think is desert war
2. When I make a custom game in the modern era playing as bismark, certain squares are shaded a fuzzy broken blue.
What the cheese is going on? I think 2 is just an oldish graphics card, but 1 is annoying me.

1. Uninstall, manually erase all civ folders, reinstall, repatch.
2. Post a screenshot. Post your system specs. Experiment with various graphics options. New drivers, directx...

It might help if I actualy patched the game. Never saw any point before because logging on in multiplayer freezes my game.
I'm really not that bothered with 2
