Tzar is a Bulgarian strategy game set in a medieval fantasy world. It has three factions, the Europeans (who are an amalgam of Byzantines and Bulgarians), the Asians and the Arabians.
Gameplay is centered on mining gold and building large armies which are further customized by special objects which you can either find on the map or buy. Also the units have experience points.
I remember fondly this game. It was fun to play, and in my view it stands very well next to the much more famous titles of the genre, such as Warcraft.
Unfortunately being a Bulgarian game it seems to not have had much of a marketing success. However if you can find it it is worth a try :)

I got this about 10 years ago in a combo pack with other games it was fun.

Thanks for that.

There's a lot of talent and creativity in Eastern Europe/Russia.
I'll see if I can pick that game up.

I thought the game Reign: Conflict of Nations looked pretty cool. It's from Lesta Studios (Saint Petersburg, Russia) and published by 1C. It covers a time period (1350-1650) and area (Eastern Europe and Russia) that hasn't really been covered. Perhaps just Europa Universalis or Crusader Kings really.
Sadly, I hear the game has some bugs and the studio appears to have abandoned it. Could be wrong of course. It'd be a real shame.
