UB Issues

There probably is a better location for this, but I'm having some issues with the UBs, at least in the francophone part of Europe

Chateau: I like that this is a replacement of the manor house, but frankly it doesnt seem to fit with the Burgundians. They were a culturally strong civ (their UU makes sense for this) but they were swallowed up by France after the hundred years war and eventually taken over by the 14th century. Chateaus on the other hand, in the sense that its trying to convey (the manor houses of the rich) were more popular in later centuries, under Louis XIII and XIV and such and were very popular in the Loire region. It just doesnt make sense why they would be a Burgundian UB.

I'm ok with France having the salon as theirs (a little late for the timeline but still within the timeframe of before 1800), but chateau would be better with the French. Also a main problem is that the chateau becomes obsolete with constitution which comes maybe a little too early to be historically accurate (often times im getting constitution anywhere form 1300 to 1500, when it really started to come in the mid 17th century if Im not mistaken) OR that the chateau shouldnt become obsolete with that tech (maybe later on).

Honestly I think the manor house itself is kind of a weird building, it is part wall, part theatre part courthouse, why not consolidate this and make it do something more specific?

Royal Exchange: the bank of england wasnt founded until 1694 (still within the time period) but Britain didnt really become an economic powerhouse until the 18th century (yes also still within the timeline, but thats not the point). All of the banks in this are either Baltic, German, or Italian, which didn't have much to do with England. Game balancing wise, England often doesn't have a lot of their taxes going towards money, so the royal exchange does very little. (as opposed to the amazing genoan bank)

To make this better, I think Britain should have a more science focused UB or maybe trade (university or observatory upgrade perhaps) to help it get to industrial age first (right its having trouble), Burgundy should have a more culture focused UB (maybe a theatre upgrade), and France maybe should have something else, perhaps stability or culture (or salon could stay)

Other frustrations: Inn, Brewery, Weaver, Guild Hall, (what exactly is the infirmary doing in the civilopedia?), why not just make granary give 50%? (get rid of smokehouse?)

I'm sure I sound very picky, but I think this is one of only a few weak areas (other than bugs ) in the game; you guys have really amazed me with what's been accomplished, and sorry for the long post

The Infirmary is the building that you only can build when you have Knights Hospitallers in your city. (But I think I'll make it stronger this evening, if neccessary)

gotcha, never had that corporation before.

what do you think of my suggestions?

hehe, well would you consider looking at brewery, weaver, guild hall. Dont those feel just weird to you, as well as having so many city improvements? I mean what kind of building gives +10% gold or culture for resouces

I agree, those three should be removed or changed.

However, I like the recent changes to market and castle!

Edit: Archery range shouldnt be required from castle. Where is the logic? But we could tie barracks and archery range to manor house? And stable to castle? What I would really like is tie units to building. Like knights and castle. Maceman and manor house. Axeman and barracks.

I never build manor house, cost too much and nearly useless.

For culture, just get religion or research religious art.
For defense, just build wall and castle.
For maintainence cost and stability, we have courthouse after code of laws. Before that, stability shouldn't be problem because we are still small. And after I grow big and shaky, I am usually able to build night watch already, and constitution is near.

Also, it costs too much. 100 hammer? I'd rather build 2-3 units. And we have too many other useful buildings to build yet, like market, granary, monastery. I value manor house only about 50 hammers. If not for stability it would be less than 30.

We should let manor house have some benefit from manorlism to encourage players to build it.

I agree, I think many of the buildings are unbalanced. For instance, why does the aqueduct cost more than twice as much as the apothecary? (its not too much harder to get arabic medicine than public works)

I think there should be a discussion page about which improvements are balanced and the overall picture of improvements (I think there are too many gold upgrading improvements, but maybe thats just me)

yeah thats pretty much a dead forum, like many parts of this mod.

Do you guys think a civ5 version of this would be possible? (I'm in no way wanting that, to be honest I really dislike civ5, but that's where all the modders and players have gone)

If it will come, it won't be soon. I think the vanilla RFC needs to be made before we can even start. And I don't think that that mod will finish soon. And I can't play Civ V, because my comp is too old. And I won't switch to a newer one soon.

But it's certainly possible.

well yeah, perhaps civ5's version will come out in beta just as civ6 is coming out!

I don't think I'll switch to civ5 til its 20 bucks or less. Until then I will be very content with beta for this, especially when reformation is fixed :)

I don't wish to let the mod die, but time for me is a precious commodity these days. The main problem is that the current SVN version is broken, there seems to be numerous Graphics, XML and Python bugs. I will have to go back to Beta 3 and start from there. Can someone who has been keeping track make a short list of the changes since then (like moved spawn location, changed UHV and so on), the SVN keeps track of changes, but not all of them are listed as "changed this, or changed that", some of them just have list of files that were changed and that is hard to decipher.

Is this something I could help with?

Just to let you know that i'm not lost, i'm currently at my parents' and don't have civ4 or my working files around. I'll add some of the papal state features, when i'm back at home. A Happy New Year so long!

Great! Have a happy new year :)

Merijn, we still need to overhaul the improvement system; it may not be top of the priorities list, but the current buildings are too numerous, too clunky, and hard to follow what they do.

just some replacement ideas for some imo currently 'unfitting' UB's

England: Marketplace, Guildhall (instead of Bank but still financial)
Portugal: Harbor, Lighthouse, Guildhall, Marketplace (Economics is too far away)
Burgundy: Guildhall, Winery (mentioned by someone else)

I like the Portugal idea.

Burgundy will have a winery (whenever merijn_v1 or I get a chance to code it).

England will probably be most appropriate with the Guildhall (extra merchant or + 10% gold). Marketplace is an early building and it may be a bit OP.
