I wanted to experience modern era war at about 14 centuries onward and I know I could not do Emperor or above yet. So I started a standard pangae map with 7 AIs on Monarch. I couldn't play a bigger map with more AIs cause my comp is really ANCIENT.

So I was the America. I had had the best possible start location one could ever imagine. 3 bonus food and by the river. I was quick in grabbing all the land. So, everything went on. I couldn't go into details as the game was too long and I didn't make any notes about it. Anyway, when two AIs were wipe out, I checked my victory status and I could see I held 45% of the world population. Naive I was, not knowing I need both land mass and population to be at 66% to achieve domination victory, I started milking. In 6 or 8 turns, I boomed to 60% world population with 10 to 15 size 25+ cities. Then, I started a war to my east and started razing every city I could so that the world population count would drop and eventually raise my population percentage.

In the process, I conquered many of the wonders, but I razed and razed until the whole eastern part of the world was barren. My ally and bodyguard, the Zulus, helped me a lot and earned themselves a few cities. Then, I checked my victory screen, I was 67% at world population yet there wasn't a victory, I checked the civilopedia and bam... I figured my mistake and immediately I made tones of settlers claiming every inch of land possible.

And bam... guess what, I achieved 100 000 cultural victory! ARGH~~~~

WTH? I spend almost 200 turns warring trying to bring down the world total pop count and I achieved a cultural victory?!

Neeway, I warred from the 13th centuries till early 20th centuries with cavalry, cannon and MUSKETMAN against cavalry, sipahi(ugh, I was razing the Ottomans) and RIFLEMAN! The whole world didn't want to sell me Nationalism and I was freaking stucked with The Republic and later MOnarchy and couldn't change to Democracy for all the cash I need to rush build my units...

So, I think I was playing a very stupid game and one should never did what I did...

ps: I doubt this qualify for "Stories and tales" since I didn't make note of all the events and didn't take any screen shots. But I think it was pure STUPIDITY on my part... ugh~

i razed the cities because i couldn't hold them. i couldn't produce enough defend units and i would not want to endure culture flipping since the land had many wonders and big cities with HUGE culture.

and i didn't mention that zulu and i was fighting the whole world? i basically had 3 enemies and zulu is not really an ally since i needed to feed him with gold to satisfy his greed...

btw, i actually spent 4 turns bombing Istanbul from 19 to 1 before managing to raze it....

   Sounds like your warmongering got you what you deserved, except for a loss--just kidding. This was a great post, funny as hell, but great.

Culture after razing opponents - that's how I lost the last GOTM.

So culture victory isn't good enough? Turn it off!

Sounds like domination would be closer if you held the cities, as was suggested.

well, if i had known that i needed both land mass and world population, i wouldn't be razing cities. neeway, thinking back, it was a funny game indeed....

ummm, not that culture victory wasn't good enough, just that the objective swayed and resulted in a unexpected victory. i never knew having just about 10 to 15 cites with everything upgraded could result in such a cultural victory even though I had only the Newton U and only the Temple of Artemis wrapped in under my cities. GUess ToA played a huge role there....giving very early 1000 years old temples :)

Not to split hairs, but you know that the temples from ToA disappear once you discover Education, right?

sesnofwthr, yeah i know..... considering the slow tech pace of the game - for whatever reason, i don't know, but it was really a pangea map with 7 AIs and not very long war - i had the TOA working for sooooo long that it prolly generated alot culture with that many cities i had...

i think razing is only acceptable when u r pretty sure u cant hold the city,in which case u r doing something wrong,as in not building enough spearman(defensive units)

i always try to send at least 1 spearman for every 2 swordsmen i send out to field

but sometimes i also cant hold the citys i conquer, but i thinks its better not to raze, take the city, and then abonden it

no rep hit for abondening citys, like u get with razing

althought u get no workers out of the deal,i usually capture many workers in wars anyway

speaking of slave(workers and settlers captured), i used all of them to join my cities when iw as milking...

i know you guys may say that's wrong since slaves required no upkeep/maintainance... but i couldn't bear to have them work at such a slow rate, and i needed the pop fast to gain that 66% pop...

but oh well, in the end, i realised my mistake too late and could have actually got a domination victory about 200 years earlier...

well, next game then...(which i've not started yet and what kind of game should i play? any comment guys? 5CC, move up to emperor? continental? archi? AW?)

smallmoskito, congratulations on your cultural victory. You won, quit complaining ;)
