i don't believe the UN should be a winning condition as pointed out above everybodies supposed to benefit. does america get any special brownie points for having the building in new york? no course not. it should basically act as a massive mutural protection system where the members vote on accepting new members. obviously they could leave at anytime and countries can vote on kicking others out for going to war for no reason such as germany invading france cos they want to own disney land.

Actually, Ghana would have gotten the brownie points -- they got someone elected Secretary-General!

I still like the idea of the UN being replaced by something generic (an "international consultative organization" wonder, available with Nationalism,) and acting like the SMAC UN (or whatever it was....Planetary Council?) The "Diplomatic Victory" option would not become availble until much later...maybe Fission....maybe even until spaceflight?

No Diplomatic victory, it is stupid and very unrealistic. Civ 4 could really benefit from the ability to form multi-lateral organizations. These would not require a building and could be formed anytime by a founding player. The charter civ could invite others into the pact. The organization could act to increase trade among partners, enforce military policy, as a MPP, or just to prevent war in their regions. Do not think UN so much as Warsaw Pact, Pelopennesian League, and possibly the Papacy(in Medieval Europe they were the mediating body). UN style organizations may pop up because of devastating wars or the presence of nuclear arsenals. There would be no UN wonder, since multi-lateralism is a way of life rather than a wonder.

If you still want a wonder, make the UN like the Planetary Council in SMAC.

Just like Turkey(I think at least) asking the US for $2,000,000,000 in 'economic aid' before they would let the US stage troops for Operation Iraqi Freedom. Its a cost of doing business and would add some strength to being the rich guy in multi-lateral organizations.

I couldn't agree more that being elected Secretary-General should not be a victory condition. When I first got Civ3 and started reading through the manual, that one stopped me in my tracks. What the hell? So Kofi Annan is the leader of the world? GHANA is our leading power? This makes no sense.
