I tried installing Civ 4 vanilla on a computer that runs on windows vista.

I got this error message:

Windows (R) Firewall Exception List Update Application has stopped working.

Then I get this message:

Download Updates for missing file. Install the package below and copy MSVCP71.dll to %systemroot%\System32. This problem was caused by a missing file. Install the package below and copy MSVCP71.dll to %systemroot%\System32, which was created by Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable Package.

Go online to the following website to download the solution:

Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable Package

I installed this update but no success. The computer allows me to finish the 'installation' of Civ 4 vanilla. I looked at the installed files and noticed that they were incomplete.

I tried running the game but I got this error message:

This program has known compatibility issues.

The computer gives me the option of running the game anyway. I choose to run the game anyway.

I get an error message telling me that I don't have the correct disk inserted which is preposterous. The end result is that I can't run the game. I tried uninstalling the game. While uninstalling the game i got some of the previous error messeges. Nevertheless it appeared as if the computer allowed me to finish the uninstallation.

After several installs and uninstalls the "Incorrect disk" error message stopped appearing and I am now able to run the game. The previously missing files are still gone however. The end result is that It appears that i can play the game properly but can't mod it properly.

Any help would be appreciated. :)

You may have the "incorrect disc." Many copies of Civ IV were printed with the wrong labels on the discs. The disc labeled "Play" is not in fact the play disc. Try the other disc if this problem continues.

The "compatibility issues" are a result of the fact that Civ IV came out before Vista existed. Download the patch for the game (latest patch is 1.74) and you should be fine.

I have the correct disk. I've successfully installed this game many times before. I've even successfully installed it on vista before. Yet for some reason I only had problems installing and running Civ 4 after I got my computer's motherboard and hardrive repaired due to a entirly different problem.

I tried downloading the patch using "Check For Updates". I got an error message that told me that the patch failed to download successfully.

I then went to Firaxis's website and tried to download the patch there. I succeded in downloading it. When I then tried to install it I got an error message.

This is the error message:

The setup has detected that version 1.09.000 of Sid Meiers Civilization 4 is already installed. This setup is not compatible with this version. You will have to uninstall the previous version before installing this version.
