Wikipedia suggests Kongo relied on archer levies for military with smaller heavy infantry corps that carried swords and shields- Portuguese documents referred to them as adagueiros (shield bearers). As many as 20,000 of these infantry remained in the capital at all times. Perhaps this is what is being referred to with the unique?
