Most of the unique units in the game are from the Middle ages or earlier, the only exceptions being Germans and Americans. Am I the only one who thinks there should be more "modern" ones?

Man-o-War is hardly ancient.

Remember, these special units came about from isolation and a need to use what was available in one's region. There isn't much isolation in the 'modern' world ;) For the most part, we all use the same thing now.

I wonder if TWO special units would be possible through the editors...mwahahaha!:D

yes, i think that each civ should have 2 special units, civs that have special units late in the game may already be conquered because of domineering units, but if they manage to survive, the other civs will be hurting! :hammer: :tank:

Therefore to balance this, i think that 2 special units should be made available to each civ.

The Zulu CSU is the Impi (whatever that is).

I like the idea of more than 1 special unit for scenario creators, so people can make really realistic re-creations of historic battles and wars, and even ones that never happened (American F-15 vs. Soviet MiG would be neat).

I think that instead of having special units at all each civ should just have its own unit graphics, so japanese knights look like samurai while french knights look like the guys in suits of armor, etc. Also unique units make the game unrealistic, since panzer tanks weren't the even stronger than regular tanks (the russian tanks were a lot better) and they certainly didn't lead to a golden age (I'd say Germany's golden age was more like 1870-1910 when Bismarck beat the French at Sedan and Germany unified as the most powerful land power in Europe).

Well, in the case of scenario creation, special units don't need to be better, they could just be different. For instance, maybe assign a higher attack value to the MiG, and a higher movement rate to the F-15, if you were doing a cold war scenario. Or whatever you please...

Do not worry about ‘the unbalance’ caused by special units… just disable them!!! That is the first thing I will do.

But why?? Special units seem to be one of the most intersting part of the game!! I sure will play with them!

For the rest, I like the idea of two special units, but only in a scenario.

What!! are you nuts!???(respectively), , the special units is the greatest idea!! this will actually make a difference between which civ you will play the most!! you might as well just play civ2 if there aren't any special units.

Get rid of the special units???

Are you serious? One of the neat things about SMAC was the each power was a bit different. Between the Sci / Ind / Mil ... attributes and the special units, what country I play means something. :)

I agree that spec units are fun – different graphics, names- but the rest (A/D/M) hm…. time will show. Anyway one of the greatest things about CIV is editor – change it all the way I like it!

I agree with Jedi Rat, I might play with special units a little bit, but I don't really like the concept. I rarely play the same civ twice, I enjoy coming up with a new custom civ to play each time I start a new game, without having to fiddle around with custom units.

:puke:

I can't stand the idea of civ-specific things. I guess I should be glad they didn't make Wonders civ-specific - it's really cool to have "The Great Pyramids of Amsterdam" and such. I'll miss having Rastafarian war-elephants, also.

Hi, I'm new to this forum and I didn't see this particular perspective to Russian unique unit issue...so here it my humble rant:

Now, I'm sure a lot of people were disappointed that Russian Unique Unit was revealed to be cossack most likely. Russian or USSR (which was dominated by Russia) Golden Age would be probably better reflected by the MIGs than Cossacks, right? What I say is that let the Russian CSU be MIGs and American CSU be a stealth fighter such as F-117 or a stealth bomber as B-2. The fact is, F-4s, 15s, 16s, and 18s have been sold worldwide to American allies, so none of them can be considered as truly unique 4 USA...and F-15 certainly does not reflect America's military prowess (IMHO). If one thinks, it's obvious that THE military hardware that Americans have monopoly is the stealth bombers and fighters. Some might talk on and on about how it would unbalance the game but it would provide a little diversity compared to several ancient CSUs like Babylon Bowman and Egyptian War Chariot. I think Russia deserves a lot more respect as the major part of a former SUPERPOWER...and I also think that USA should have a TRUE unique unit.

Thx 4 listening to me ramble:D

hi.
at first: you're right with that respect thing.
well, do you know that the russians also have stealth-fighters and -bombers?
last but not least, all the unique units become obsolete, so thats the thing they all have in commen.
but a stealth-fighter never become obsolete, which would mean a huge boni to the us-american.
(thats not fair)
