Unit Combat Animations

I've been working on a combat mod for Civ 4, and there is one lingering problem that I haven't found a solution for.

I have given Archers the ability to bombard units, and instead of doing the arrow firing animation, they swing their knives. How do I change the bombard animation to the arrows flying?

They just did it by default. I didn't do anything special.

Judging by that answer, I am guessing that we can't do anything with animations?

What tools would be needed, and does it require more graphic skills than n00b level?

This would require programming skills in python at least if not C++.
