Is the limitation on the number of units allowed in the game determined by the number of units listed in the pediaicon file (ICON_PRTO_unit name) or by the units listed in the civilopedia
( editor unit name ). IS there a limit on the number of unit types that can be made available in the scenario or just the number that can be available on the map at any given time.

The only limit I know is a global limit of 8K units (8192 units).

Thanks pounder, that answers a big part of the question. :goodjob: I have a lot of units going into this mod and will probably be adding more. I think there is also a limit on the number of unit that can be in play, or on the map at any given time. I think I read that somewhere a while ago but I'm not sure.

I believe that global limit is often surpassed but if a unit is upgraded or built by the human player, it crashes the game. Something strange like that. I bet the unit limit is just like the city limit, in that a pro at messing around in the EXE could likely get rid of it. Only problem is finding someone. The 2 (knuckles and his Russian buddy that did the city limit EXE) might be able to do that, but can't get ahold of them or even find them.

Good point. Hmmmm ee if we can track them down.

"I believe that global limit is often surpassed but if a unit is upgraded or built by the human player, it crashes the game." What i've seen in a mod, when a player reached the fatal 8192 units in the game, you cannot build anymore.
You should destruct some units then you can build new ones but the game didn't crashed.

From what I've experienced it's the upgrading of units that crashes the game when the 8192 unit limit has been reached, not the unit builds.

Upgrading a unit seems to be implemented in programming as creating a new temporary unit to copy to/from, so the 8192 unit limit is breached through hardcoding that overrides it and the game crashes.

Don't tell me they did not realize they could just change the PRTO_ID of the unit to the value of the PRTO it upgrades to... As I'm doing with the automatic upgrade in my game monitor.
