Unit Preview: Modern Legionary

Unit looks good. There are people more qualified than me already commenting so I'll leave it to them. :)

No, no, a musket. I'm pretty sure Assault Rifle will soon be considered obsolete, and replaced by good old musket in all armies in the world.

You see, a musket takes time to reload. During this process, you can think of what you are doing, and really ponder your actions. So you are less likely to kill innocent people. With an automatic assault rifle, you can just fire a burst from anger and kill people you would not have killed otherwise.

Going back to musket is the first step to bring universal peace to our world.

That's a beautiful vision Steph. I hope it becomes reality.

Too bad I already served my six months with the Finnish Army. It would've been pretty cool to get a musket instead of an assault rifle. The little pouch with the gunpowder and all. :)

Legionaries wore a scarf to prevent the armor from chafing their neck, IIRC.

Looks good, I'd recommend giving this version a musket or rifle, and making a second, modern version with kevlar armor and an assault rifle. Maybe he could have a similar helmet. This article might be a good reference, it talks about how modern US troops are wearing new body armor that is similar to old legionary armor with shoulder guards and kevlar kilts.

As I said the texture hasn't been applied yet so that shiny armor would look more like a dull steel (or grey at civ scale) instead of the shiny color it is now... I was figuring the scarf was either to keep those massive shoulder plates from chafing the neck or to pull up and cover the mouth on those long dusty marches when you're the last one in the line ;)

I didn't know the forum was going to be down tonight and I can't really work on it any today so I guess an update will have to wait.

I think I'm going to go with a rifle and the drab solid color green (since even though I'm calling him modern I've always had the picture in my head of him fighting in a WW1 style battle)... If I do make a more modern version I will try out some camo pattern... a smaller gladius and an assualt rifle of some type.

Side question... What type of grenade might a WW1 soldier of the Roman Republic use? I'm fairly sure the German 'Potato Masher' style was used in both WW1 and WW2 so I might go with that (it's not like you'll really be able to tell whether that 3 pixel blob is a grenade, rock, monkey poo, or a paper weight but I'd like to have some idea of what to use).

Cool, baby! < from Austin Powers

Absolutely amazing! But if it wouldn't be too much trouble, when you can post an in-game screenie, could we see other units in the shot? I'd like to see the size of this compared to other units.:) (Your last Legion unit looked a little smaller. Or is that just me?:hmm: )

a good one ;)- I'd say a shrapnel grenade would be a good bet, as it maximizes enemy casulites per single soldire- and the Roman army until the economy collapse dint he late empire, was all about maximizing hoe efficent thier troops were, by getting the most bang for thier buck, so to speak

I'd like to see both a modern one and a WWI version.:)

Yes, the 'potato masher' would be ideal!

what exactley is the "potato masher"?

this:

but what dose it DO? (I know its grenae, but why dose it have that name?)

This looks like an interesting unit, would it be possible to see a preview of the size it will be ingame as that would give a better idea of how it will look.

can't you see the obvious shape of that hg? :D

   I didnt even notice

hmm, Xen doesn't know something, fascinating.

This looks great as WWI infantry. And has been said before no modern soldier would wear all that get-up, certainly not a WWII soldier. A modern Roman soldier's kevlar vest might retain some of the design elements of the old armor, but only as an homage to the past. The suits they are making today have been pretty well designed for maximum effectiveness and movement.

Keep in mind that that would cripple the world's armies, since there will always be those that DONT want peace, and don't play by the rules(Sure use your 19th century weapons, I'll stick to my Ak47). There will never be true world peace as long as evil exists in the world(And that comes in many forms, not just terrorism) but it would be nice....

Correct me if Im wrong, but isn't the age of melee weapons far in the past? Don't all soldiers just use guns these days? Why would the Modern Legionary have a sword? Just curious...

Presumably it is decorative and meant to be used for parades etc. Thus not going to be an attack anim.

he wouldn't, unless he lives in Xen's own little world.
