unit preview: Spetznaz

I had nothing to do with his description, Balou. I was just waiting and waiting for someone to come along and change the 'z' to an 's' is all ;) (Yes, I'm with the spelling police)

I'd love to help you find sounds to speed along the release of this unit, but I'd have no clue where to begin to look for Russian sounds...

The part you quoted was directed to dog. I meant to say that I will mention dog and J. Keller as the authors. And I wanted to know whether dog wrote the description or J. Keller (and dog edited it for use in civ3).

The sounds don´t necessarily need to have russian voices in it, normal death, victory etc. sounds would be alright too.
For the attack sound I think we can use gunshots from any AK rifle (not only AN-94).
If you happen to come across some nice sounds but don´t know or don´t have the time to edit them post them here (or post a link) and I´ll do the rest.

Yes, Keller wrote it and I edited it.

Balou, here's a zip of one sound for all animations except the attack. A couple are the same as the ones Stainz posted, but they're all labelled and easy to sort through for you (although the file size limit here has pretty much defeated the purpose of that).

In the spoken Russian victory, he is saying something like "I'm coming for you". Don't know much it really fits with the salute, but it seemed appropriate for a spetsnaz soldier to say :D

And sorry about my last post... seemed like you were still referring to me.

I don't know how you'd go about it other than recording it the only fashioned way, but there's lots of good Russian-talk in Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge. I especially liked the Apocalypse tanks.

Thanks for the support.
I recorded the fidget sound myself and just need to test it ingame now, so this one is nearly finished.
I will then start to sort out the rest of the sounds today. The russian victory sounds good, although it seems to be a bit too long but I´ll find out when I test the unit ingame.
I hope we can get the sound done without making use of sounds from other games (beacuse that always sounds a little weird). Maybe I should ask in some russian civ3 forums for help. Does anyone know a good address?

Now that you are soon done what will be your next projekt? Some non-modern units maybe.

I found a very good webpage with lots of useful weapon sounds (especially machine guns), the name is Geeks with Guns.
I have two different attack sounds ready now (both from this page) wich may not be too realistic but they fit very well. The fidget sound is also done now and for the victory sound I think we can use the one dannyevilcat posted.
So we still need sounds for the fortify and death animation. I will try to record both sounds myself but I would really like to have some kind of "god damn it" in russian language for the death sound (even better if combined with some sound of him hitting the ground).

Anyway, I think the unit will be available within the next two days :)

Yoda Power:
The next three units will be modern infantry as well. After those are finished I will probably take a longer break from unit creation. There is one other unit I´d like to do which is some kind of 'hero unit' like in the game Warlords. However, I don´t know if I´ll be motivated enough to do it when I´m finished with the modern infantry.

What kind of Modern Infantry unit´s?

good ones ;)

The main goal is to have units that could be :
- civ specific
- terrain bonusable (Did I just invent a new word?).

Thanks for the "damnit" sound, dannyevilcat. I edited it a bit more and I´m quite happy with the result now.
Then there is only the fortify sound which I will also finish today. That means the unit will come out this evening (european time).
But I need to know where you (dannyevilcat) got the russian samples from so I can give proper credits in the readme.

The three modern infantry units include the "chasseur alpine", which is a french soldier trained for combat in mountains, a soldier with sand camo and AK rifle, and your standard soldier with forest camo and most likely an L85A1 rifle.
You can use these units as spec ops, unique units or generic modern era soldiers. All of them will come with drop animation.
The idea is, like Steph already mentioned, to give those soldiers bonuses in specifc terrains (e.g. sand camo soldier has movement bonus in desert terrain etc.) while they can also be used as unique units (spetsnaz for russia, chasseur for france, desert for arabs, forest for uk).

Have you considerd doing the Objective Force Warrior?

Here are a couple of Articles:
Objective Force Warrior (OFW) is the Army’s flagship Science and Technology initiative to develop and demonstrate revolutionary capabilities for Objective Force soldier systems. An integrated system of systems approach is being employed to support the Army transformation to a soldier-centric force. The Objective Force Warrior is a major pillar of the Objective Force strategy, complementing the Future Combat Systems (FCS) program.

OFW notional concepts seek to create a lightweight, overwhelmingly lethal, fully integrated individual combat system, including weapon, head-to-toe individual protection, netted communications, soldier worn power sources, and enhanced human performance. The program is aimed at providing unsurpassed individual & squad lethality, survivability, communications, and responsiveness — a formidable warrior in an invincible team. OFW will also be developed to be fully integrated with FCS.Objective Force Warrior: Modernizing the Warrior through Army Transformation

Despite the advances in smart munitions and the ability to drop them from relatively safe distances, the time always comes, as it has in Afghanistan, for the infantryman to move in and take ground.

In the same way that technological overmatch has been achieved in many aspects of larger hardware, the aim now is to achieve similar overmatch with regard to individual infantry capabilities.
