UNIT REQUEST: Merkava Mk. 4 Tank

It will be exhausting to do so, because you will have to go and paint every single frame of the FLC's.

By the way, couldn't you come up with a better nickname? ;)

I know it would be exhausting ! That's why I asked YOU to do it ! :D

Concerning my nickname : I'd like to keep it ! It's a private joke with a friend. In fact, almost nobody understand what it means. That's why I feel it funny. Plus, it makes me recognizable by yéhudim brothers ;)

O.k. O.k I'll make the merkava, it had been On my list for a while, but I was quite disturbed by the arguing on this thread- I also plan to get the t34 finished soon (specialy for venger :) ).

But To be honest I'm not sure that the Merkava would make the best Israeli UU (though if you want to use it as one feel free) I would recomend it for a flavour unit or as the graphic for an israeli scenario (what I suspect it will get used mostly for). It is a good, inovative design; And the isaelis do have the advantage of actualy getting to combat test all thier equipment- one of the reasons that the Panzers IIIs and IVs of WWII were so powerfull was the lessons learned in the spanish civil war by Panzer Is and IIs serving in the condor legion (the condor legion was made up of both planes and tanks). But to be honest in Civ III it is important that UUs become obsolete, otherwise a Civ can have an advantage that can potential be milked out for the rest of the game- although most players don't get to the modern era while playing the standard game.

I also think that a UU should be Much better than any thing available to contemorary armies- the panzers were mach better than any thing on offer at the time apart from of course the T34 (which in my opinion should be the soviet UU- the cossaks should be a seperate Civ). The Merkava is good but its main advantages are to be found in desert/urban warfare- many modern tanks, due to buget constraints are designed to be used in the home nations terrain- the british tanks recently had terrible trouble in desert training because some cheapskate in the MOD had fitted them with lightweight engine filters-designed for use in western eruopean warfare; This is good however, as it proved that the british army is not ready to go to war in iraq- George W bush will have to do his own dirty work :) its a shame that Civ units can't be given Terrain specific advantages- though if you make desert have a move cost of two (as it should have) you could give the merkava the All terrain as roads flag to represent its improved desert performance.

Do you accept Checks? :D :goodjob: :king:
You might be right about the UU thing, I might use one of the Tribal warriors as a Maccabee as venger suggested and Make the Merkava a flavour unit - An Israeli MA with different abilities, some better some worse.

Thing is, I might and I might not. Still haven't decided.

Anyway Smoking Mirror, can you (when you finish) also post the 3D model file in a good format? (.3ds or .DXF for example)
I want to experiment with it a bit, that's how I'll learn to make my own units in the :scan:future:scan:.

Yes, when i get the 3d model right I'll post a DXF so you can comment, suggest improvements.
I'm still having trouble making the drawings in to a good model, I may go and buy a Airfix plastic model kit, but as it is, I think its going to be a Merkava MkIII cos that what most of the pictures/diagrams I have found are. I like the shape of the MKIV better, so if I can get the right model I'll make that.

Pleaaaaaase everybody !! Give them to him !!!! :D

I'll try to find too !

Updadte on Merkava production;
Iv'e done the Body of the tank, tomorror I'm going to start work on the Turret, its going to be fairly detailed, and although you won't be able to see all the details on the Actual unit (it will be far too small) the over all effect will be to make the unit look less cartoonish and more like a real tank-as seen from far away).

I could do with some feed back, the merka photos Iv'e got show the tank with plenty of Holders, and external baskets for storing equipment, sometimes they are all lashed down securely ander a single Sheet and some times the whole thing has a more "In use" apearence with individual bundles, and boxes stashed all over the place.
Should I do a Clean, parade style tank with everything stowed, or should I do more of a "In active service" tank with very thing visible?

Any way, here is a small preview of the body, as of the moment its quite uncluttered, latter I may add more icons, tools, bundles etc.. What about the camo? Any other sugestions;

I agree ! It's better to make In active service. After all, we won't produce this tank in the game to keep it in a shulter or just show it on the !We Love The King Day Military Parade ! :D

About the Camo : well, you've done a good camo for shure, but I think
  • MOST of israeli tanks are more green /sandy-brown than grey, to fit with desert landscapes (look back for example at the first page of this thread)
  • They don't have a gradual shading color camo, but a united color.
  • And don't forget the V is yellow (but maybe you choosed that little thing to display the team colour; but as this tank is intended to be a specific israeli unit, I don't know if it is necessary)

So far, you've done something very good. Thanks again, I can't wait to see the finale release !!

By from Paris !

Excellent!

Notices:

The basket on the back is not only for storage, it is also used to defuse HEAT explosives if they hit it so they either won't work or won't explode directly on the turret.
Look at the Diagrmas I posted on the first page, if you look at the basket you see that it has small metal thingies (43) attached to it. That's what I am talking about.

And I agree with BoulboulGadol (:p) that the Camo should be more like sandy brown or Green, and not Grey-brown texture.

Also, I don't know if it is an illusion but it seems like the front of the model is a bit bent down in the middle, when in reality it should be completely straight. (Look at the pics)

Fantastic great job! :goodjob:

So people...
What's the news ??

I haven't heard about this tank for a several days.

Smoking Mirror, are you still on it ?

I am still working on the unit; Well I havn't given up on it at least- I'm quite busy at the moment, and Motivating myself to do animating is becoming quite difficult, be asured, I will get this unit done, but its not going to be in the next week or so.

I should get the model done soon and I'll post it in .DXF format, So I can get some feedback on it.

I'm having trouble with the model in places because the shapes of the Merkava are very complicated- the front of the tank is slightly dipped, because the main body is made up of three shaps, the middle one being hollw, so that the back door can open (not sure how to use that in the animation, maybe have troops get out, or have it open when the tank is destroyed) but I like to be flexible with the model, so I have options when animating, the Hetzer tank killer is an exmple of a model where I've left myself too few options and am having trouble gettin gthe animations done; the main body is just a solid lump, and as such cant explode or do anithing interesting. Any way, I may have to partialy remodel the main body to sort out the problems.

This might of gone faster if you people would of cut the chatter and make the unit. Ive never seen anybody quote and quote and qoute, give me a break.....

Me and venger argued, and both of us can't make units, so it doesn't matter :D

OK People !

As my old philosopher friend Ay Fu Kyu used to say :
"If you want something done, do yourself !"

My own personnal mod is almost ready. All I need now is this Merkava. I can't stand the wait, so few days ago, I decided to sit and learn Rhino 3D to try to create it.

You can't imagine how long this takes for a beginner !! :crazyeye:

I could'nt find any blueprint of the MK4, so I chose to go for MK3.

I had A LOT of problems, but I can now show you the first 3D model. Of course, I have to put on many more details, and of course, I have to set colors and textures, and I suspect this gonna be a whole new world of problems.

So don't expect a final version till few days.

Then, I will have to make the animations, and... I don't want to think about it !

So tell me what you think of this first shot !
