This is something I put together about 5 years ago in MS Paint after I read Starship Trooper by Robert Heinlein.

It is supposed to be a mobile infantry soldier, although the coloration is not at all like that described in Heinleins book. This is just my interpretation of the mobile infantry.

I would love to see it come to life in Civ3

Wow!!! That is pretty cool looking! I would love to see that in Civ3.

Also lots of 'skinnies'. In the book, these troopers were dropped
from orbit, their successive layers of heat shielding burning off
with the debris becoming chaff. It is very, very well thought out
and infact not at all like the film.

The film was a major disappointment. :( The book was so cool, I love the description of the drop sequence, and would love to see them in action. What do you think of the pic above?

I think it is an excellent picture, though I have to admit it is not
how I imagine the mobile infantry. I see them more like the drop
troops from the early 2000AD (UK comic book) story The VCs. I read this at quite a young age and thought the idea of troops dropping in from orbit was an excellent, innovative idea - until years later I read Heinlein's book which was written in the 50's!

nice unit i havent read the book the movie was a pile i say

The movie was a "pile". NOTHING like the book!

In Heinlein's story the mobile infantry dropped from orbit in powered armor. I'm not sure, but I think they where the inspiration for most of the modern powered armored infantry ideas in modern science fiction. I'm not aware of anyone who had anything like it earlier. The story was also almost completely butchered by Hollywood. Par for the course.

Thank God that someone who actually liked the books (ie could actually read a book) made the Lord of the Rings movies. Tolkien's work was the inspiration for much of the modern conception of fantasy (ie Elves, Dwarves, Dragons, Wizards, Orcs) in the same way many of Heinlein's stories where the inspiration for many standard scifi elements. How do you write a movie if you can't even read a book?

Rant done.

Check out Balou's new Deep Eyes unit. Except for the lack of jump gear (and shoulder mounted auto mortars) it's very close to my impression of the mobile infantry from Starship Troopers. It's got that Gorilla look described in the book.

As for skinnies. They were a species that had given the coordinates of Earth to the Bugs that allowed them to launch the attack that destroyed Buenos Aires. The Roughnecks conduct a reprisal raid on one of there cities. I love the psych warfare grenade he tosses into the crowd there. It anounces that it's a bomb in the skinnies language and then starts counting slowly down, meant to terrorize them more than kill.

the movie was crap
so what was the plot of the book

well the tv series i think kept up with most of the book i think

I think there was an animated series for awhile. Never saw it, but I think it had powered armor even though it was a semi-spinoff of the movie. Apparently the producer or director of the movie devoted his entire CGI buget to the bugs and so couldn't afford to do the powered armor? It is amazing to me that these dolts make millions of dollars ruining good ideas and good stories.

Found the animated series website.

Here is what they look like. Your drawing is better. But at least there are not light infantry like the movie.

Here is the pedia entry for the M.I.

#PRTO_Mobile_Infantry
^
^
^Based on Robert Heinlein's 'Mobile Infantry' from Starship Troopers
^
^A [Mobile Infantry] Trooper's real power lies in his armor. Aside from that, M.I. troopers are trained in a wide variety of skills, from how to maintain the armor they use, to survival in the wilderness, building improvised weapons, Hand-to-Hand combat, standard tactics and how to use almost any weapon known to man. The M.I.'s one and only real purpose is to destroy the enemy in any environment, and their training and armor allow them to do just that.
^
^A city must have both $LINK<Uranium=GOOD_Uranium> and $LINK<aluminum=GOOD_Aluminum> in its
$LINK<Strategic Resource=GCON_ResourcesS> box to build Mobile Infantry.

^
^
^First and foremost, M.I. powered armor grants a soldier extensive protection for his surroundings. It defends him from enemy weapons, including bullets, shrapnel, energy weapons and explosions. It has optic and audio shields to protect the eyes and ears, and can functions as a space suit if needed. It also comes complete with food and water concentrates for extended operations. Second, the armor enhances the wearer's intelligence gathering abilities. IR snoopers, radar tracking, internal radio, internal locator, internal clock, encrypted 'command circuit', the works. Third, the suit increases the wearer's mobility. Using a powerful series of synthetic muscles and jump jets, the user can hit close to 40 mph while 'on the bounce'. Finally, the suit increases the user's physical strength, allowing him to carry more and bigger weapons.
^
^An M.I. trooper is equipped with some highly potent and destructive hand-held devices. These include: a hand flamer, used for anti-personnel and incendiary work; a heavy flamer, used to burn/cut through objects (and people); a rocket launcher that can fire 2 kilogram nuclear warheads; a Y-rack bomb launcher that can be set to fire automatically (and has a range of several hundred yards); belt bombs and fire pills. These weapons are in addition the standard M.I. assault rifle and of course every M.I. is equipped with his trusty 20mm sidearm, it won’t do much against somebody in power armor, but it will put a hole through most other infantry units.
^
^There are three main types of M.I. armor: command, marauder and scout. Command armor is as fast as scout armor, as tough as a grunt, with top of the line communications and electronics equipment, including large-scale tactical display. Very expensive stuff. Marauder armor is the backbone of the MI. Strong, tough, reasonably fast, easy to mass-produce. Scout armor is lighter and faster, and has better sensors. It is physically weaker, and carries less armor and fewer weapons. The superior electronics jack up the unit price somewhat.

What kind of mod would you make using this unit?

Would you base it on the book, the movie, the cartoon?
