I'd been thinking about the strange behaviour of the upgrade costs trying to figure out a pattern.

For example a slinger -> archer cost 30g for 25p, whereas a warrior > swordsman cost 80g or an archer to crossbow cost 200g.

I got a few from the lets play vids:

Where x is the production difference between unit upgrade and unit being upgraded.

I think I may have a result, and it's surprising. It seems we get a bigger discount the later era it is.

Basically:

Slinger > archer [30g for 25p]
Warrior > Swords [80g for 60p]

I noticed for units upgrading from the same era to the same era, a 5 production difference resulted in 10more cost (archer > cross vs. spear > pikemen). Therefore production seems to contribute to cost at a 1:2 ratio.

I then looked for other effects contributing to the other differences and comparing the different units it seems eras contribute to the cost, but importantly negatively.

So: slinger>archer: 25p * 2 = 50 but we pay 30g (20g discout)
warrior>swords 60p*2 = 120 but we pay 80g (40g discount)
archer>crossbow: 130 * 2 = 260 but we pay 200g (60g discount)
spear>pike: 135*2 = 270 but we pay 210g (60g discount)

Looking at the differences, it seems Eras give a discount equal to era*20 where Ancient = 1, Classical = 2, Medieval = 3 etc...

So it seems the unit upgrade cost is:

(Production Difference * 2) - (Era * 20)

or 2p - 20e
