I am not a modder, so I have no clue if this is even possible, but this idea occurred to me one night at around 2AM as I was stumbling around the house...

It always bugs me how much it costs to upgrade your units - especially if you have a whole bunch of them. It makes sense on some levels, but not on others. So say I have a bunch of old spearmen lying around, and for whatever reasons, they haven't been upgraded yet. I can now upgrade them to infantry, but I have to play an absurd number of turns in order to get the money to "re-oufit" these spearmen and train them to be infantry.

OR

I can just recruit new infantrymen (IOW, build new ones) in probably ¼ of the time it would take to get the money to buy the upgrades.

So my thought for a mod is this. Instead of buying upgrades, you build them. I don't know how much this would cost in comparison to building a new one, but it should be less, you are not recruiting new people, you are re-training old ones. So you throw the upgrade into the build que, and at the end of the cycle, you get one of your units upgraded (a specific one preferably).

Like I said, I don't know if it is even possible, and it may even be a horrible idea, but despite waiting a day it still sounds like a good idea to me. I probably didn't explain it very well though, so hopefully someone reading this understands the reasons here and can better elucidate the idea and/or implement it.

Hmmm... this is an interesting idea, I could change my military bases mod to allow you to do this. Basically instead of having your units train for XP, they could train for an upgrade. How does that sound?

Reminds me of how it works in Medieval: Total War. But would making upgrades cheaper unbalance the game?

i believe the formula works out as the diference in production costs times three then add 25 to get the upgrade price.

Either Zombie69 or Roland mentioned that in a thread so if you can find it then you know where you can edit it the files for a flat upgrade cost.

That sounds great. Would it be hard to do?

I have no idea. I would guess it depends on whether the AI uses it.

No, it should be too hard to do. It will have to wait until I finish my sniper mod, update my great person mods, release my GP Trickle mod, etc, etc, etc...

But really, I will get around to updating the military bases mod pretty soon, especially since I have the drill instructor now, *thank you white rabbit*.
