I'm trying for a Diplomatic Victory in my first game of Civ3 and it's proving more difficult than I would have thought. I've build the United Nations in my capitol, and I'm the most dominant force on the planet. After I build the UN, an immediate vote was held to determine a Secretary-General, no one won.
Does anyone know of a button to push to bring up the UN again, or a way to lobby people to vote for you? I'm on good terms with everyone (including my nearest competition) but I want to get their votes (a la Alpha Centauri)

P.S. This is a Warlord game, circa 1995, started with eight, now there are five, Americans, Germans, Babylonians, Zulu and Persians. Wiped out the English, French, Iroquois)

Well... the UN is a very interesting wonder. It will pop up at first and at succeeding turns when the strategic balance has been affected somehow. In game terms, this means the votes have moved around somewhat. I'm a little disturbed that you don't know how everyone is going to vote beforehand. It might have helped if they showed the diplomatic attitude of opposing civs beforehand as part of the diplomatic screen so that I would know better when to look for that vote.

I have actually achieved 2 Diplomatic victories already (on Regent and a 3rd by Space Race). I almost never go to battle, and though I don't give in to Ai demands, I always keep them "Polite" or at worst Annoyed. But at the point when the UN is about to be built (by you or an AI) start kissing ass. If all of the AI's are "Gracious" or VERY Polite, and you are at least one of the top 3 Civ's, they will vote for you. Usually Geramny will vote for himself, and I can't actually blame them. As redundant as it seems, diplomacy is the answer to the Diplomatic victory.

Feels kinda cheap to win this way tho'.

Last time I built the UN, I knew I would win so I never held the election.

I'm a litle dissapointed that the UN is only built for a diplomatic victory. Part of the fun is convincing other nations to vote in your favor in certain issues like for peace between nations, or etc. It would even be cooler if the un had a peacekeeping force. I still think Civ3 is a great game, but I feel that for the UN only to act as a means to win the game rather than another means of diplomacy, it retracts from the game.

That would be great -- I hope someone does a UN peacekeeper force run by some guy named Lal.

That would be an interesting rule where a peacekeeper force intervenes. That would really slow the game down though in the late modern. Imagine trying to figure how to beat your opponent using non-military means. ;)

i hoped that they would give the UN the same abilities as the UN from SMAC.. ( you could win through it too, is it?? )that votes depended on your pop (the one who built it would get extra votes, that the current leader of the UN could set global laws/rules enforce peace, whatever..

sadly now it's just a stupid way to win... if they would just change it that you couldn't vote for yourself (DUH) cos if the ai was smart they would never vote for someone else... i mean you are not gonna vote for someone if the only thing he's gonna do with it is end the game?????

now if you were a peacekeeper, pplz who are in war would vote for you, etc....

OUCH!! :crazyeyes

I hope this post gets added as the board is currently having some problems...

Anyway, here's the problem. I installed the patch, built the UN, and initially clicked 'no' when asked if I wanted to hold elections. I actually finished the UN a turn or two before I meant to, so I held off on the election long enough to finish the Zulus. I wanted to hold elections immediately after that, but I cannot figure out how to trigger a vote. Do I get the option every 20 turns or something? It seems I've been playing for a long time (am about to wipe out the traitorous Chinease) but haven't been prompted again yet.

the UN is my biggest disappointment in the civ-legacy. I usually switch off diplomatic victory in order to keep the game playable.

I digged some elements in alpha centauri even though I didn't find it very playable. the diplomacy however was far superior, and UN-like actions such as "repeal atrocities" was really what made alpha centauri so cool.
