Units!

Hi Vel! Welcome to CFC! Nice looking units you've got there! :goodjob: An upcoming WWII scenario? :D

Just thought I'd bump the Units thread with a some units I've been fiddling with. I only show them to show off - basically I'd like to use them in my own scenarios before anyone else uses them... :D

Much much thanks.

Well, there are several versions of those units. Just look in APL's Crises scenario - and have a look through this thread...

Ah heck, migh as well post a few of mines. They're not the best at all, but...

They were made for my Legend of the Five Rings, Middle Earth and my new "End of the New American Century" scenario. For identification, they will use "L5R", "ME" and "ENAC"

Top row : Fire Dragon, Water Dragon, Earth Dragon. (all L5R)

2nd Row : AAW Frigage, ASW Frigate, Stealth Destroyer (all ENAC)

3rd Row : F-16 Falcon, F-117 Nighthawk, FA-18 Hornet (ENAC)

4th Row : Void Dragon, Air Dragon (L5R), Dragon (ME)

5th Row : Battleship Carrier (ENAC), Swordmaster (L5R), Sub Carrier (ENAC)

6th Row : The Ring, Nazgul (ME), Carrier (ENAC)

7th Row : RAH-66 Comanche, Orbital Bomber, Orbital Fighter (ENAC)

Oops. Here are the actual pictures.

I did some updates, and you're going to have to help me:
Which of the top row churches is best and which of the two second row monasteries is best?
Keep in mind that it is in the Medieval period and in the Mideast.

I'd say the first one. A sandstone coloured building blends in better, in the desert.

Hint: The Cossacks don't have anything to do with it... :D

I was thinking: does anyone else want to see this thread broken into separate threads for easier viewing like what was done at apolyton? I think it would make it easier for those of us searching through the annals of this thread :D

yes it would be nice, but then again this forum isn't that active.. :(

It would be nice - and then we could clean out much of other discussion from it too... making it easier to find the needed units...

One decided to mess around with a few things the other night out of boredom, and remembered my feeling strangely empty with the F/A-18 Hornet pics that were out there. And one remembered its similarity to the Mig-29, looked up the best one of that type from CNWO, and the following was the beginning:

evhornet.jpg

One can't seem to get rid of the white fuel tanks/missiles underneath; one has no drawing nor painting programs, so this was done pixel by pixel using the scenario editor. :ack: If anyone could clean those up, it would be nice; one is thinking of a pure grey version also, but this one has its merits.

Edit: Alas! It doth seem rather blurry as well.

Could one be tempted to perhaps post the gif file in which thou art editing the unit so that we can get the unit without the mess.
It wouldn't be very hard to remove the fuel tanks. Also, it isn't that similar to the Hornet, is it?
Anyway, you can use good old MS Paint for editing as long as you edit within files that already have the correct format and leave them saved in the format.

One will put the gif version in at some stage later.
And it looks Hornetish to moi, or at least on the ways. Needs a slightly longer fuselage in proportion, and the angle of the wings needs to just straighten a tad. And the white tanks nearest the fuselage need to be moved out slightly, and those furthest out either disappear, or replaced with far thinner and smaller variants. The tail also needs a little change of angle.
As it is, one wanted to get a Hornet that was in a similar style to the good pics of Soviet and US fighters out there, in the right proportion and manner. In my opinion, the few Hornet pics that are out there are quite ...bland...:ack: Which is a pity, as they are a widespread aircraft, particularly in the US Navy carrier battle groups of now and in the future, and thus an essential feature in my view, of scenarios which are in the time period 1985-2005+. Such as perhaps a different version of Red Storm Rising (see note 1), a Desert Storm scenario (see note 2), a latter end of the Cold War scenario, a post Cold War scenario, etc, etc.

And as one said, one does not have good old MS Paint or any such programs, and talk of formats is in a jargon one does not know. The only means one has is changing things pixel by pixel with the scenario tools, and one can't seem to get the background colours for that.

Note 1: The second version of this is much improved from the first, but in my view it does employ the wrong map. It gives vast amounts of empty space back in the hinterland of the USSR, Central Asia, and even Pakistan. This is not a building and expansion scenario, so this space does not have a purpose. At the same time, at the other end of the map, the Atlantic, one of the key battlegrounds, is fairly narrow, and the US is a small addendum. A somewhat different map, which has its right edge at the Caspian, and uses that space for the Atlantic, and just a little more of the Americas, would fit the premises of the scenario better. As for how to do this surgery on a map, I know not.
And further, there are a few units that are somewhat surplus to requirements, such as both types of AWACS, SR71s and Spy Satellites. These all have the same purpose, the AI can't use them, and the human player will not find a lot of use for them, and they duplicate each others purpose. Just evil musings.

Note 2: There is a lot of potential in the idea of this scen, and certainly an interesting balance could be found between the two versions so far, incorporating a lot of the good modern units out there.

Hey everyone,

Remember that cool game "Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe"? Yes? Well here's something you'll like.

The Arado Ar. E 555-10, 555-1. Both were designed to be high speed heavy bombers, but never made it to the production line by 1944.

There might be some problems with the colors, so if someone would like to redesign the camo color scheme so that these to planes will work properly I'd much appreciate it. Have fun!

Those are nice! Perhaps the edges are a bit too exaggerated by those black lines. But I like their colour schemes! Good!
