Unloading a Galley

Hi,

I'm a beginner to Civ3 and having some trouble...why doesn't [L] unload the archer I loaded into a galley?

The galley is on a coast square and is shown to contain the archer.

I loaded the galley by dragging the archer to the galley...then moved the galley where I wanted it...then tried to unload the archer using L, as the doc says. NOTHING happens...

Anybody know why?

Thanks,

Ben

Are you sure he is on the boat. If he has to cross land and then board the boat, he won't do it. But it may just be a bug, so use the keys at the bottom of the screen.

I don't know why. Are you sure "L" unloads. I never use it. I simply use a direction (#) key to "bump" the transport into land. A message appears, asking me if I wish to unload all the units or specific units.

I hope this helps.

My understanding was that you only used the "L" button when a ship was in port. That's the only time it's ever appeared to me. I'll park a ship in a port city and the "L" icon pops up. Otherwise, I like everyone above just run into land and drop 'em off that way. I wonder if the idea is that a ship going into port allows that unit to move THAT turn whereas just landing on some remote part of a coastline takes all of your movement that turn. That seems rather nitpicky to me but it's a thought.

IIRC, using L in port to unload allows the units in the ship to move that turn. So, yeah, what Buecephalus said.

If you are not in a port and the Galley has at least one movement point, just crash it into the land. The unit(s) will be able to come off.

If out of movement points, you can select the galley, then select the unit(s) and move them manually (assuming they started the turn on the galley).

Thanks for all the replies...I figured it out...

I'm having more trouble figuring *how* to do something than what to do...for example, I get interrupted by other leaders for intruding in what they consider their space, but how do I tell them to get out of mine? I tried double-clicking on them thru the foreign ministry window, but don't see any options for that...

Depending on your computer, PC - right click, I believe, or Mac - control-click on the civs unit. You'll have the option to contact that unit or a unit in a stack, doesn't really matter. The dialogue interface pops up where you ought to have an option listed to ask them to vacate your turf. If this option isn't present, then their not in your territory.
