Why should you care?
So, if you have played Rhye's and Fall of Civilization, you know UHVs are. If not, then they are basically conditions you have to fill in order to win a "historical Victory", If you're the Babylonians, your goals are to research certain technologies and have the highest city pop. and culture by 700 BC. What's great about these goals is that they force the player to make decisions that would the people in those eras would realistically do. Create Confucianism in Egypt? No thanks, I have to research Music so I can culture bomb a great artist and get the 5000 Culture needed to win. Conquer Europe as England? Sorry, too busy conquering the rest of the world instead.

I think C2C could use some of this historicity. Now I'm not suggesting combining Rhye's and Fall with C2C; That would be too much. Instead, I am proposing that we create unmodded-in historical challenges that we can use to add a bit of immersion to C2C. The most obvious historical challenge category is probably create the culture that corresponds to your civ and "found Confucianism and Daoism" as China.

What do you guys think?

THESE CHALLENGES ARE NOT MODDED IN, THEY ARE JUST FOR FUN.

As I've seen with Great Prophets on, civs will found their favorite religion when they get the chance. India will found Hinduism, Arabian civs will found Islam, etc.

We have had a number of discussions on such an idea and variations on it, up to and including all the ones from Rhye's and Fall. There are some very interesting ideas out there. The only problem is getting a modder who can spare time to do the work.

Now if you are willing to do most of the work I am sure the modders would be more than willing to help you get started and with any problems that come along.

The main problems are:-
what are these "victories",
what do they do, and
how do we get the AI to try for them.

What do they do?
Personally I don't think they need to do anything in game but I think the three main options should be
  • End the Game - it has been won after all.
  • Minor achievement in game - in Civ I - III this meant an extension to your palace or thrown room
  • A C2C player achievement stored outside the game some how and associated with the player. Like they do in modern games.

End the Game

People have asked for other victory conditions and having this would provide that. This is probably the easiest to code.

Minor Achievement in game

In previous versions of Civ as you achieve stuff you get to build and add to your palace or thrown room. This could be done but requires a great deal of fiddly graphics and some simple Python. There is already a "hook" in the existing code. It looks like Firaxis was going to include something 3D but never got round to it.

Modern Game Achievement

Modern games have a set of achievements that the player can get and show off to friends. It should be possible to something similar.

Oh, you misunderstand. I'm not intending for it to be modded in. All I'm trying to do is create personal challenges that people can aim for all on their own. I guess we could get the AI to try for them, but it would be simpler for the challenges to just be personal.

In answer to DH: you could remove the hero ties to the special achievements and instead tie them to this. Treat it like an open quest available to all players. This could put another crimp in those 'diety is too easy' players as the initial ai lead is likely to prevent the player from getting an early ones.

OK, ignoring the AI side means that what ever they are can't give any sort of boost to your nation. That leaves options 2 and 3 some sort of reward such as the palace screen like in former Civ versions or the modern achievements outside the game.

I can think of one some -
Explorer Lesser discover all the Natural Wonders

Explorer Greater be first to discover over half of the Natural Wonders and circumnavigate the globe.

C2C Cultural build all the cultures in your base cultural group

edit We could just pop up a screen saying you achieved something as a proof of concept I suppose.

Alternately some could be implemented in such a way as the AI can get them but not need to know and actively pursue them. For example a special Explorer task where you need to discover 5-10 Natural Wonders before you enter the Classical Era. You would get more the more wonders you were first to discover and many nations could get something similar no matter where they are in the tech race as it would be awarded when you enter the Classical Era.

I looked at R&F for the Egyptian small victories. Two were about city culture by a date. This wont work for C2C as our dates don't work properly because we allow so much variation in options, game speed and so on.

Also we are eventually going to get rid of all the Civilizations and insist that you build yours from scratch!

In the mean time the Egyptian small victories could be
  • build the Egyptian Culture before getting the Copper Working technology

  • build The Great Lighthouse, The Great Library and The Pyramids (same as R&F)

  • have 5 cities with population 6 by the time you get Sedentary Lifestyle.

I would open it up to everyone with a native culture of African.
