Unofficial Patch for Vanilla

If you don't support fireaxis by purchasing warlords..... then why should they offer you any further support?

The support offered in vanilla was almost non-existant as it was. The game was released in conditions of huge memory leaks that lead to CTDs and other major problems. The one manner they supported the game in was 1 email on their site. This email address wasn't even available until a week or two after release as well.
So, they released a game with no way to support it, because I guess they figured their game was perfectly coded and no one would face problems on release. How smart is that? Then I sent in either 2 or 3 emails to that address in the following month about my problems along with my dx diag that was short and to the point and I never heard from them. It was people on this site that helped me. I still have never even got so much as an automated response from Firaxis.

Sure they sent out patches but the memory leaks weren't fixed until the 2nd or 3rd patch. While the first one hid horses from you until animal husbandry. Anyone suffering from the lied about hardware specs recieved no support from the company. And I would say out of 3 patches that concerned gameplay, the only one that made any real difference was the chop nerf in 1.61. The whole time people were shouting that axemen were broken.

Console gamers don't get a single patch. Just think yourself lucky they've given you as much as they already have. Half of you seem to think fireaxis owes you something.

Um, buy an Xbox. Along with what jray said, Xbox live has alot of game that allows you to download new content and patches as well. Think myself lucky? Why in the world would I do that? Microsoft supports its products (even PC games) better than Firaxis did this time around. Firaxis does owe me something, a product that they support. If they do not intend to support their products that are only a year old (not even a year old when warlords was out and support officially stopped.) then I intend to not be a customer of theirs.
I would still be gladly be willing to hand civ4 over for my money back. But I tried this when it came out and the box was opened. So, I was beat. There is no such thing as customer disatisfaction in PC games once the box is open. All you can do is hope for support. Which doesn't exist here. We don't even get told what is on the agenda. Just download the patch and see what is there - or read the changelog. There are still problems in the vanilla version.

if warlords is an ADD-ON, why hasn't the patch been made for the original as well?

This sums it up for anyone not able to understand the concept. Obviously, warlords isnt just an expansion pack. It is a funding project. Either fund the company more of your money or forfeit patch support. (The only support offered by Firaxis)

You sound like a spoilt child. When you bought the game, thats what you bought. You bought a box, and the contents of the box. Your money doesn't entitle you to anything else. If you didn't research the product carefully and discover that it's not to your taste, then more fool you. You shouldn't have bought it in the first place. They didn't tell you that their game was going to be bug free..... did they? They didn't specify on the back of the box how long there would be support (like MMORPG's do).... did they? It's very nice for them to release patches.... but they certainly don't have to.

Of course warlords is a funding product. Fireaxis is a company, and making money is what they do. If you don't continue to support the company by buying their products, then why the hell should they continue to give you freebies?

Forgive me if I have been spoiled by better support from other companies. I bought software. You act as if this type of support is the normal. I do focus on companies that do support their games and by doing so I do not have the problems people speak about on bad support of games. I haven't had much problems with this kind of unsupported products. Probably because I quit buying from the companies that practice business like this.

The reviews were all raving about it BTW, too. Looking at reviews would have been even more misleading. The only review I found that addressed the problems the game had upon released said something along the lines of "But I wouldn't worry about it, these issues will most likely be addressed before the game hits the shelves." There was no accurate way to do research. They claim ICS was fixed but that was one of the first things addressed when the SDK was released with the AI city placement that was added in on a patch.

EDIT: I am referring to the AI seing a chunk of ice that your culture has yet to swallow on your continent and then rushing a settler over to it to found a city with only ice and a few coastal tiles in its fat cross. (Which it never get to because normally the city is consumed by your culture.)
And yet again we see Firaxis having its game supported by its fans instead of stepping up to the plate themselves.
They didn't tell you that their game was going to be bug free..... did they?

But we aren't talking about a bug that allows a unit to run across water. We are talking about the game being unplayable to alot of people that use ATI cards. 1 of the 2 top selling video cards. We are talking about a HUGE memory leak that makes the game unplayable past the industrial age. These arent little bugs.
Then a combat system that is unbalanced and not fully thought out from the beginning. These are things that play testing should have caught. Very "in-your-face" issues. The game was not tested decently.

LOL. I swear it isn't hard to see any of this. I don't get how people don't see that this game was just thrown onto the shelves without any regards to its current quality. It was a race to see who could put out a faster game between Civ4 and AOE3 not about who could put out the better game. (Which will in the end lead to more sales. But it doesn't make it on the quarterly report if they hold off.)

They didn't specify on the back of the box how long there would be support (like MMORPG's do).... did they?

Well, no they didn't. But all of those things mentioned plus more were all real issues on its release. Yet, if you went to CivIV.com, they had no section for tech support. So I guess they figured they weren't going to need any. Which could lead one to believe that the game was indeed "perfectly coded" in their eyes.

It's very nice for them to release patches.... but they certainly don't have to.

LOL, yeah ok. I highly doubt they would have any audience if they never released another patch after the first release. There is a difference between being a fan and being naive.

Of course warlords is a funding product. Fireaxis is a company, and making money is what they do. If you don't continue to support the company by buying their products, then why the hell should they continue to give you freebies?

Because I bought their initial product. Maybe I feel Warlords has nothing in it that interests me. Maybe I don't play scenarios and am perfectly content with the current civs. Why should I have to go buy this thing I don't want and don't need to continue to get support on the product I did purchase?

Maybe I have strapped finances in the video game department. And when I was unable to play my version of Civ 4 for 2 months after buying it I didn't want to be shafted again by the same company. Maybe once it came out, and I was able to see it was stuff that I do not care about that 30 bucks was too much to spend on it because it is alot of stuff I don't want and only a couple things I do. (Mostly GGs and patch support)

Face it, they made you have to pay for patches.

Thanks a lot CivDude - great work, and much appreciated.

In terms of additions to this mod, I would quite like to see the inclusion of the trireme unit, same as in Warlords. And as many of the new leaders and their UUs as possible, but assigned vanilla traits ... if anyone is willing to go through the pain.

The reason I'm not playing Warlords is that I don't like most of the new addenda, especially trebuchets (make mid-game combat less interesting, even after the nerf), warlords and vassal states (AI inept at handling either well) and all the fluffy special buildings - which is why I would like to see a vanilla version with just the things that I like.

Hope this patch gets flagged by the admins. Again, thanks!

J.

hey fellow 86er, thanks for this. i second jorun in that i would like to see new the new leaders without changing the traits already present. however, the new ones could have their warlords traits. i realize this is a pain.

a little side note, am i just confused or is the happiness penalty for whipping in warlords only 10 turns? 15 seems like a long time.

nevermind, thats just cause i play epic

What does this patch do that 1.61 doesn't? And if I download it does it install into the game automatically? Or do I have to do something else after downloading?

It adds some of the changes made in Warlords. Its just a mod so copy into the the mods folder then load it.

Thanks CivDude!

If you could answer a question about yr mod I'd appreciate it.

1. I am most interested in the improved AI by Blake.
2. I like to use Sevomod; but Sevomod does not include the Blake AI (sevo abandoned his project to pursue other things).

If I install yr mod is there a way to make the improved AI reflected in the Sevomod?

If not, I will still use your mod; however, I will add longer game speeds by splicing in Fex FX's modcomp.

Again, thanks and good work. I look forward to trying this out soon!

You could try replacing the CvCoreGame.dll from Blake's AI over Sevomods. It will break the following features and maybe some other stuff but looks like most of the stuff will be left intact.
