Upgrade guide:

Introduction:

I know that in almost every game you get to make a decision: "what upgrade should i take?" In this guide, i will tell you what to consider when choosing an upgrade.

Here is a list of all the upgrades. So basically, offensive units get offensive and neutral abilities, and defensive get either defensive or neutral abilities(except they get medic too i think).
The +50% or + 100% giving abilites are added to the base value,so for example:

archer: base defense value:2
veteran +50 %
engineering +100%
= defense 5, not 6 as some people might think.

Offensive:
Blitz: Unit receives an extra move after an attack
Infiltration: +50% strength when attacking cities
Medic: Allows for healing of this unit in enemy territory

Neutral:
March +1 movement point
Guerilla: +50% strength when attacking in your territory
Scout: Unit can see its opponent in a city battle, and has increased sight range

Defensive:
Leadership: +100% defense when in a stack
Loyalty: +50% strength when defending in friendly territory
Engineering: +100% strength when defending cities

1.Barbarians

Okay lets think that you have just captured a barbarian village and now you have a warrior that has to choose what upgrade to get: Infiltration or Blitz.
It seems almost instantaneous that you think "i will choose infiltration because it is hundred times better." But think of these questions:

- Is warrior already too worse unit to be any use for war?
- do you already have better units?
- are you the Aztecs?
- is there alot of arbarian villages nearby?
- are you going to use this unit as a scout?(if you have march as an option.)

Because in one of these situations, the Blitz may be better. If you are the Aztecs, with blitz you can capture a barbarian village in one turn, rather than 2-5 turns. It is a big difference especially if there are lots of barbarian villages nearby, or lots of enemy units capturing the villages. Also in war it is sometimes more efficient to attack the enemy several times a turn rather than crush them once in a turn with huge force.

2.Offense
In war, sometimes you get really "bad" upgrades for your units. Medic, scout, march, guerilla or even blitz. But think, what ability is most useful to you at the moment? For example if there is a strong offensive and weak defensive unit near you and you need 1 movement more to reach it, choose march.

3.Defense
The defensive upgrades are pretty simple. Always try to choose in this pattern:
1.Engineer
2.Leadership
3.loyalty
4.march
5.scout

But in few cases, you are defending a hill square for example, you should rather choose loyalty or leadership than engineering. If you are going to move to a far a way city quick, choose march if possible. Pretty simple.

4.Scout
Especially in multiplayer the Scout upgrade can be really important. But try to avoid getting it to your units, because you can easily get it with using militia(militia automatically has the scout ability) that you get when you building a galley or galleon. An useful tip to keep in mind.

The upgrades are really important, so think seriously because sometimes it may be a decision of life and death.

Thanks for reading! Hope it helped! :)

Also don't forget that when you merge your units into a army it keeps the upgrades of each individual unit in the army. So if each guy merged into the army had a different upgrade your army will have three upgrades instead of just one.

The medic upgrade is totally useless when you're the Aztecs, since you either survive the battle with full health or you lose. You won't ever have to heal.

That's not technically true. Aztecs don't heal if you retreat. But it's close enough that it doesn't matter.

Im a little that boats/Submarines don't get upgrades, i think they should because some of my ships have done some spectacular feats anybody with me?

Eddie ;)

I agree, I mean In Civ IV they could get upgrades, why not now? It's not even like there woulden't be useul upgrades for them: +1 movement, +1 strength, +1 sight range, all would be super nice.
