As far as I have got it, it isn't possible to upgrade the Ancient Cavalry you get from the wonder Statue of Zeus.

Correct me if I'm wrong please but if I'm right about this. Then does someone know what the reason is for this? Would the unit be overpowered otherwise or is it just a bug or what's the reason for it?

To me it would be logic if the Ancient Cavalry would be able to upgrade to Knight or only directly to Cavalry. I'm thinking that the second option would be the best option in that case since:

1. Statue of Zeus becomes obselete with Metallurgy and after that when you research Military Tradition then you can build Cavalry. Nice timing...sort of.

2. Hence the name Ancient CAVALRY... *hint, hint*
;)

3. Ancient Cavalry won't be overpowered since it will take some time until you research Military Tradition so you can upgrade AC (to Cavalry).

What do you say about this?
AND yes I know that I'm able to change this, if I want to, in the editor. :crazyeye:

Thanks in advance for input about this subject.

Well I have never build Statue of Zeus so I would not really know but I think it is already powerful but should have a large upgrade cost to Calvary.

I like the AC graphics, and I like keeping them around in my game for that reason- no upgrade, espcially to no stinking knight (now if it were a cataphract, the issue migh tbe different ;))

If it upgraded to Cavalry, it would cost 120 gold per unit.

A Horseman to a Knight costs the same (just for reference).

You could probably get a bunch of Ancient Cav, so upgrading them directly to Cavalry could be too powerful.

But, since it is wonder produced, I would reduce the cost of Ancient Cav to 20 shields (causing you to get less shields for disbanding, and making upgrades more expensive, without changing the interval it gets produced).

Just can't let that cataphract go, huh Xen? ;) I think it's fine as it is. It's sort of a special unit.

@CT-

its mainlyl nastalgic now, my dear old cataphract, but I plan to keep it fresh in the minds of the desgners for civ4, I can assure you of that ;)

I like keeping the Ancient Cavalries around without upgrading because they have the extra hit points. Besides, by the time the Statue of Zeus is obsolete and you can produce no more ACs, you should have been able to beat out 3 or 4 great military leaders with them. A couple of armies full of elite ACs is lethal even against riflemen. Ancient Cavalry is my favorite unit in the whole game.

Love the AC. Produced like 3 leaders in one game with them. Built an Army of them and later (after Pentagon) added a regular Cavalry to the Army - they get along just fine, as the Ancients teach the 'modern' Cav about Chivalry and ancient warfare, while the moderns are trying to teach the AC's on how to use a rifle. The AC's are amused with this new-fangled technology, but prefer the intamacy of close-combat, brutal warfare.

The only problem I have with it, is because the total potential HP for AC is different than every other unit in the game.

Here are my concerns...

Will a veteren AC upgraded, keep its 5HP, or will it be reduced to 4? If its the former, (once you upgrade) you'd have a bunch of 5HP vet calavry, just waiting to become elite. Once they do, bam, 6HP calavry... HUGE advantage. Get 4 of those in an army, and I doubt anything could beat it. An army of elite AC is bad enough, imagine one weilding guns...

The additional would be lost, because cavalery has no such bonus. It is like upgrading an Indian war elephant to cavalery.

Since you get them for free, upgrading them does not make much sense. It would be too much of military bonus.

I personally dont think the advantage would be much, considering you can just prebuild a bunch of cheap horsemen to the same effect. You can make those in all cities and in less time then the 5 turns that it takes ancient calvary(which is only 1 city).

You also have to have ivory for the statue of zeus and you might not get that every game.

The Statue of Zeus is already waay too over-powered. It should be removed from the game. As should the Temple of Artemis, but for a different reason.

Hence, no.

in a game where the Sistine chapel is considered a wonder of the world, every Polytheistic temple wonder in the game is favortie for me, thus I disgree with you- hell, I happen to think the SOZ is one fo the best lookign wonders (if only it could be seen in the city veiw!) in the game, would be ashame to take it out

Too overpowered.

AC calyvary isn't that powerful, unless you have stacks of them (which will take many turns) I prefer to use kinghts, so I say let them be upgraded so let be the same for crusader err... rifleman(?)

No upgrade. Then you would also need to allow upgrades for Crusaders. The player with either of these wonders would have too much of an advantage.

Oh for pitty sake, let them upgrade but make it cost 500 gold per unit then! Christ everyone talks about the AC like it is the be-all-end-all of the game! You get ONE AC for every 5 turns. It has what? 1 bonus HP? Other wise it is pretty much a horsemen. I just dont get what the big deal is, its not excatly the super-OMGWTFBBW-uber-o-noe-my-mega-hertz-got-stoled!!!1111oneoneone harbring of death and armageddon that everyone seems to think they are.

I just dont get it. Ive seen tanks fall to spears and MI fall to attacking warriors!! Are they over powered?? I can see it now, the tank crew saying "RUN AWAY!!! THAT GUY WITH AN AXE HAS SUPERMAN LIKE STRENGTH AND LASER BEAM EYES!!! RUN AWAY!!!!".

It just makes no sense. Why SHOULDNT they be allowed to upgrade??? 6HP? Big freaking whoopteedo, it aint like you get a whoel lot of the AC. Now if you could BUILD them then thats a different story, but as it is you cant.
