Upgrading Ranged Units w/ Range Promotions

Hi everyone

Apologies if this has been discussed before but is it just me or do others feel "cheated" by the fact that ranged promotions become obsolete when upgrading, say, a crossbowman to a rifleman? One spends significant battle time, gaining experience and then it all becomes "worthless"...

I really noticed this on the Mongolian Keshik... I started out with Horseman and then upgraded to them... my previous melee promotions become temporarily obsolete and then with the keshik to calvary, my range promotions become obsolete... so I've got a unit with 150+ experience that doesn't really have much to show for it?

The double attack, city raider, terrain promotions are not lost (although terrain promos work only on offense). The +1 range one is lost, however. I agree it's a poorly implemented mechanics. I think Thal's mod fix it, but there is too many other changes in that mod for my tastes.

Check out Thal Mod. It fixes a lot of bugs & improves the game dramatically.

I've had the same thought, and if it comes time to promote a crossbowman, I usually just can 'em or pawn 'em off to a friendly CS. It's that botched upgrade policy that keeps me using siege weapons(when resources are not problematic) to defend my cities.
