In your head...
Playing a game as Portugal, after a swift productive offensive war against Korea, I got an army. I put three veteran swordsmen in, I just got Feudalism, and I was wondering If I could upgrade the swordsmen to Medieval Infantry?

No. You often want the army quick, so the units do go obsolete. If you're just a few turns from a military upgrade, you sometimes want to wait to fill the army to get the next generation of military units.

It's a bit of a problem, because the obsolete army counts as 4 or 5 units for unit support, I believe.

If unit support is a problem and the army is really obsolete, disband it for the shields. You don't get shields for the units inside, but 100 shields is pretty nice anyway.

The upgrading of units in an army is only possible with intense use of the editor by setting armies to upgrade to normal units. When the army upgrades to a normal unit, it is "spitting out" the units it contains, allowing to upgrade them, too.

With the normal unedited biq this is not possible.

Even an army of archers may be disbanded for 100 shields, and that's the only way to hurry the production of an army at the military academy. Well, except hurrying it with a military GL, which kinda doesn't make sense :p So if you built it, it might be a good idea to disband your obsolete armies to hurry one that you could fill with cavalries ;)

Armies are also good for quelling resistance in that first turn after capturing. The 100 shields for disbanding is also nice for partially rushing a factory, in the later game.

At least in conquests, you can cash-rush armies.

Actually, armies may be rushed with cash, too.

Edit: CKS beat me to it, dagnabbit.
