Thanks for the advice redsitter. I know I could win at Emperor whenever I feel like it but I don't. Because I don't want my first victory at it to be a ancient conquest. As I said before, my playing style is different.

Dunno what you mean I never win before 0ad, Ive never really thought of winning with 20 chariots, cant see it working vs 7 AI's on emperor, I win like 1900ad or right at the end.

Some who have been playing this game since it's release have won very early. There is a meh FAQ on gameFAQ documenting this stradegy. But in my view it's breaking the game. Cherio!

I always play Chieftain.

It is years since I have played but I used to play mostly emperor; sometimes king. I believe I played one prince game and never below. If you play the game well, you can win most of the emperor games.

I enjoy mowing down the competition as quickly as possible so Chieftain all the way for me. I move to Emperor or that hidden "Galactic Regent" level one must hack in when I run out of ideas to abuse Chieftain.

I always play emperor. First I build as many cities as possible quickly, then rush for Pyramids, Colossus or both. If that works, I can win peacefully; just fortify a few border cities, switch to Democracy and outtech the AI into oblivion. If not, a more aggressive approach is needed (usually against whoever has the Pyramids).

chieftain - for a normal game. well i used to play it when i was six or seven :) but great for 1cc or 2cc peaceful SS strategies. strange AI handling on this difficulty. the great warmongers (mogols, greeks) are failing and peaceful builders (babylon, china, germany) became extremely dangerous opponent in space race and also in nuclear wars.

warlord - still very easy. not much harder than chieftain. maybe ai is stronger.

prince - getting interesting, AI techs up much faster and rapidly build empires in peaceful times. trying to be democratic-economic-superpower often leads to disaster when the greeks or zulus appear with dozens of military units :) modern conquests are many more challenging if you doesn't face phalanxes with your armours.

king - really hard. theoretically the AI has no disadvantage or advantage to you, but pragmatically very hard to be on your guard. they are very good at economy. i would say one should give up builder style for warmonger. mongols, russians are pain on this difficulty :(

emperor - once tried with the germans, finally the indians won. luckily gandhi is very peaceful so he didnt waste me, though he was more than capable of. i dont know how you should win a SS victory here or tech as fast as the AI and have dozens of able military. i was barely hold off the greeks, though i had twice as many cities..

thats all :)

mine is prince/king, i dont think i will ever be able to win on the mysterious E :)

As is my habit with all new games I start it at the easiest level and progress to the most difficult (if there's an option). And having succeeded at the hardest I stick to it concentrating on improving my final score! Thus with Civ...I now always play at the Emperor level...have been at it for the past 15 or so years! Sorry I missed the Poll!

I almost always played King level, though once in a while I would try my hands at Emperor. The thing I didn't like about Emperor was that, IIRC, the earlier periods were super sped-up: before I could blink it was already 1ad. I like playing the ancient world, and I didn't appreciate being rushed through it so quickly.
