Once you get into modern era and I think after you've researched nuclear fission, press F5 ->Supply and Demand-> Uranium. Here it will say if there is a city demanding Uranium. It might not be a city demanding uranium all the time, and only cities supplying it will show, and if you find a city demanding it, you might have to be quick on delivering a uranium freight so that they don't stop demanding it.
Sounds like Smiffy is coming from a Civ3 background. In Civ2 there are no "sources" of commodities; if the conditions are right your city will change in the late game to supply Uranium. Yes, in civ2 very few of the resources supplied are found as a terrain resource. And those that are, like silk and oil, there is no direct connection.

Also from the days of the old demo game I learned that uranium makes you a crapload of money in trade.
