Use of Helicopters

I use helicopter a lot. Thier quite useflull when you need to capture an enemy that do'nt have railroads. Thier also great for deep penetration tactics since they move six squares per turn.

Ever thought about paratroopers? They can penitrate 11 (10+1) in one turn, and they don't cause unhappyness when in cities. Clean with Sth fighters, then paradrop. If you leave one movement point for each of your fighters, you can land them in your newly captured city.

I have rarely used helicopters since my first few games when I included aircraft carriers in my attack forces and used helicopters to take cities (because they were ususally out of paratrooper range). Then I realized that a land attack force of howitzers was much cheaper and more effective anyhow. Unless they don't have railroads, in which case armour might help, or positioning stealth fighters in newly captured cities, which is even better. Recently the only time I use helicopters is if they come with a city I buy.

However, the AI can be very annoying with helicopters late in the game. They fly them long distances over oceans to my poorly protected rear cities (usually 1 riflemen), and can take the cities entirely too easily, especially if they are isolated. They may be a very effective strategy to take out a not-very-advanced civ a long way away...

Odd but I never seem to use them. Probly becuse if they get counter attacked they die quite fast. with a df value of 1.

I prefer spending an extra 40 shileds on a unit that has two extra points of defense.

What unit do you mean?

Paratroopers: 6A 4D 1M 2HP 1FP
Stealth fighters: 8A 3D 14M 2HP 2FP

Paratroopers have the same defense as riflemen, and 1 better attack. Stealth fighters aren't supposed to defend, but if attacked they still have a chance of survival.

*looks at unit chart*
Wow guess I've been under-using the paratrooper for all these years.

I use helicopters very frequently. They are sure better than stealth bombers (dont even get me started on them  )
I like them because they have good attack strength and can take over cities. The losing health part is a disadvantage though. The AI seems to like them.

Personally, I regard such units as novelties, and only ever used air units in general in the WWII scenario. Bombers and stuff were useful when stacked with a tank or something cos ground units couldn't attack them, and fighters couldn't kill the tank.

You may want to consider another strategy for the long unroaded terrain -- roads! Send in your first boat (2 tanks, 3 howies, 1 spy, 1 Jeep, & an engineer -- to found the coastal city) to establish a beachhead. Second boat brings re-inforcements -- include a couple of engineers; third boat in this case brings more engineers & spies -- having six to nine engineers brings RR in short order; if need be crank up the total to a significant number.

My brother tells the yarn of a game years ago where he was battling the Romans to a standstill -- no breakthroughs either way for too long of a time. So he decided to start a road on the south pole & eventually came up behind the enemy & cleaned house.

Combat engineers are a valuable part of any assault team.:ninja:

I love using helicopters for quick attacks deep into the enemys territory especially when the enemy has no airforce. So I can affort from the territory(crossing mountains and sea). For me they are like partisans, only stronger and faster.
