This has probably been asked before, and if so, please just refer me to that thread. But I would like to use the new units that are only available in scenarios in random map games, and don't know how. I tried using the file and instructions here:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/archive/index.php/t-88681.html
but they just give a tiny sample map where you can try out the units, and furthermore, it didn't work because I couldn't find the Medieval Japanese units to transfer them, so it quit the game every time I tried to play that sample map.

If anyone can tell me how to use the new units in random maps, or can refer me to a thread where instructions are given, please do so. Thanks.

go to the creation part of the forum...they tell u how to move files into the game folders... in your case the job is made simpler. basically you have to move the actual unit (ex Combat Engineer) folder into the civ 3 conquests/art folder. (copy , paste) then you want to update the civ 3 conquests civilopedia and pediacons folder. just see how the civlopedia and pediacons are listed in the WW2 scenario and once again copy and paste the civlopedia and pediacons into the actual civ 3 conquets folder.

-Hope this helped
(P.S u cant do it on random maps...they must be in a user created scenario so make a scenario named "Bob" or something and mover all the new units u want into it, by using the conquests editor)

juballs2001, are you aware that you can make random map scenarios?

Is there a way to make a scenario without making the actual map that it plays on, so that I wouldn't have to make the map ahead of time and know where everything was?

Sure, like warp said, you can eaily make a scenario with all the unit you want, but still keeping the map random. In the editor, if you dont check the flag: "custom map" it will always be a random one.

Is it absolutely necessary to update the civlopedia and pediacons? I don't even know what pediacons are, so I'd prefer it if I didn't have to tinker with them. But can I still use the units without updating those two things?

Changing Pediaicons.txt is must if you want to assign animation to your units. The part about assiging civilopedia icons isn't necessary, but should be no problem since all units in civ have them (just point to right files).

I think that civilopedia.txt can stay empty. In that case civilopedia descriptions will stay blank.

No matter what I try, I can't get scenario units to work in a scenario that I make. Copying and pasting the units to All Units/Art/Units hasn't done anything, and I don't know what all that stuff about Pediaicons is. I'm not the most computer-literate person in the world. Can someone please explain to me in as simple English as possible how to make a random map scenario in which I can use units like the light tank? Any help that anyone can give will be appreciated.

I need some help with this. I want to use scenario units, like the light tank, in a random map, but don't know how. I know I need to make a random map scenario, and I have done that, but I was told I also have to copy and paste some files and do some stuff with Pediaicons, which I don't understand at all. I'm not too great with computers. Could someone please give me a simple-as-possible step-by-step walkthrough of how to make a random map scenario where I can use scenario units? Any help at all will be appreciated.

Ill try to explain simple. Firts,go in the editor and create your unit, In this case "light tank" Then, below the name of the unit and the type of the unit(sea/air/land) there is a case called "Civilopedia Entry" At this place, write PRTO_(what you want) You can write anything you want, but keep it simple. For our exemple, we will put PRTO_LT.
Then, its time for you to copy all animations into your scenario folder. Lets call it XYZ.
In your folder, put 2 Folder, called Text and Art. In you Art folder put a folder called units and in this folder, put the animations for your light tank. In the Text folder, copy the Pediaicons from the main game. Open it and scroll down all the way down until you see some line that look lik
#ANIMNAME_PRTO_"XXX"
Go to the end of that and add a new line:
#ANIMNAME_PRTO_LT

Then, just after this line, put the name of the folder of your unit, Light tank.

You are now done with a new scenario with a light tank.!
