Utility to Record In Game?

I saw a really nice video a few weeks back where someone had recorded their game up a certain point. Is there any Civ-specific utility everyone uses for this? I'd really like to make some in game movies and reflect upon my mistakes or use them to go back and write down history as it happened, after the fact instead of stopping every turn to jot down notes :)

Thanks!

Sorry I don't know exactly where it is offhand, but CivReplay is an excellent program along the lines of what you're looking for. It's not exactly a vid-recorder per se, but it'll keep track of almost any stat you could think of, and a few more for good measure. I'm sure it's on-site somewhere (check mods - utilities), but I can't look too much at the moment since I'm sadly stuck at work. Good luck hunting though!

I had tried Civ-Replay out some time back but couldn't really get it to do what I was wanting, perhaps I will try it again, thank you for reminding me about that one.

This guy's video was pretty slick, but I can't remember where I had found it on here to go back and see if he'd said in his post what he'd used.

Thanks Again!

If it was actually a video, perhaps the guy in question used a piece of software called Fraps?

I looked into FRAPS as well, I'm gonna check it out when I get home from work this evening. I'm not sure if I have to buy the software in order to record without some sort of "freeware" overlay over the picture or it will only record for 30 seconds or such though so I'll check it out and report back :)

Where this video was? How long?

I can't remember who or what it was for but the video was about 31 minutes long and I was enthralled sitting there watching someone else's tactics and I wish that there were more out there rather than just looking at beginning and end save games :)

It would be somewhat interesting to see. It wasn't recorded 'till the end or was it? How it was edited, I guess they didn't show every single move/turn.

Fraps won't work. I have the full version of the newest fraps, I use it to record things from games, just about every game I own for the PC can support fraps. But Civ3 doesn't, when I load up fraps and start Civ3, I can't record it, aka the framerate and things don't appear.

Thanks for the heads up on Fraps, that figures...

This was like an .AVI file and it showed everything real time, it wasn't edited other than to add music, it was 30 minutes worth of playing, from his start to sometime later after he'd gotten a little ways into the game. I will check tonight when I get home and see if I still have the file and try to get a clue as to what it was made with or who made it. I really want this now :)

It was a program named Camtasia for the recording part...its not free, just a 30 day free trial. Its awesome being able to go back and watch the game he recorded for tips :)

Well share it if you have it :)

I remembered I saw a video file two years ago online. Someone was playing Aztecs in a small(?) world at deity and used false peace treaties to take out a civ. It was real video. At that time I thought it was cool (while I was a regent player). Now I think that is not the right way to play the game. :)

The name of the video was "Homage to the Jaguar Warrior" by Lathero(?)..done in camtasia and it was a few years ago, you and I are speaking of the same one microbe.

But now you have my curiousity peaked...it seems I had read his strategy all over this board many times before seeing it in action and now I'm curious how it could "not" be the right way to play.

He fought his war legitametly, he sued for peace and took all techs and money, then when he was ready he went back to war, sued for peace one last time, took their remaining techs then finished conquering them. Its not an honorable way to do it persay but in Civ it works real well alot of the time :)

How would you have done it you don't mind me asking :)

Microbe (and me) like real peacetreaties as making peace and breaking it within the 20 turns is considered an exploit. Taking everything from an AI in a peacetreaty and not honoring it is "not done".
Perhaps Microbe has more reasons why he doesn't like the strategy besides false peacetreaties.

I guess I didn't pay enough attention to realize he'd ended the treaty with force early, my bad. I don't agree so much with that either :crazyeye:

Like Rik said..

Like many others in the Succession Games community, we play the game in a more strict way, i.e., avoid exploits at the very least. We have our own rules which might vary from game to game, but almost all the rules have a base line that we do not break treaties.

For how we usually do at deity, you could read the SG forum for a lot of examples. :)

I could not find th ethread for it, I found the video DL. I just wanted to post an error in the sound track list. It says "son of a preacherman" by Janis Joplin, but it was Bobby Gentry. I suspect Janis was already dead, when the song was written.
