I agree this starting location is not as good as some of you say it is. No river would mean a big lack in money supply.

If he is building universities, he likely has not discovered sanitation. Size 12 cities are as big as he will get for awhile. You don't necessarily need irrigation to reach size 12. He seems to be doing fine, considering the terrain.

Nice start but the city placement is not perfect if you want to use towns to pass the continents with boats. I would place Leptis Magna one square to southeast and Hadrametum two sq north and one right to make it as a passage city.
