UU for the Zulu (Post them here)

Well, uh, in civ 3, yeah, they only have the Impi... Unless you are referring to custom units people have created for them... In which case I'd refer you to the creation & customization forum.

If you mean historically... well, the Zulus didn't last very long. They were only on the rise for awhile, for a few decades (?) before coming up against the British and getting their *** kicked.

The basic Zulu formation is to march in a column and then quickly and directly storm and hit the enemy head-on until they break IIRC. Fairly effective against other tribes but suicidal against the military technology brought by the Brits...

So the impi is fairly representative as their UU. I can't think of any else, really.

I agree with Knight-Dragon, all I could find when I researched was them losing to the British and Shaka. They actually didn't mention the word "Impi", so maybe naming African Units is better.

Shaka was the leader who wielded the Zulus into a new war machine. ;) Not someone they lost to.

Impi, IIRC, is not really the name of a military unit. Rather the class or category name of the individual warriors (?)...

I think "Impi" was the formation they marched in or the elite troops caserned by Shaka, they hadn't cavs, artys or anything so I can't think of another UU for them.

Time to move another Sebsage thread! Sebsage, this should go in the Creation & Customization forum. Thread moved.

Sorry if I just jacked your thread :(

Wouldnt Ethiopia be a better African Civ since they were around alot longer?

Here's a website:

http://www.nguni.com/fashion/fashion3.html

"Impi" is apparently a Zulu (Bantu) word for "army".

Here's a great leader name they left out: Mzilikazi. Not a Zulu, but another Bantu leader.

Umpakati is apparently a name given to Bantu light cavalry in Rise of Nation game. But according the following site it just means "veterans", and perhaps it could be applied to some future elite unit:

http://rapidttp.com/milhist/vol044sb.html

That site confirms that "impi" simply means "army".

Unless someone can find names from other tribes describing other armaments or fighting styles, perhaps "impi" could be used more generically:

Assegai Impi (the Feudal, iron age unit in the game)
Umpakati (a hypothetical elite guard - perhaps a future marine or special ops unit)
Impi Cavalry (lances on horseback)
Impi Rifle Cavalry (you get it)
Impi Musketman (you get it)
Bantu Javelineer (the stone- and iron- age, irregular units that predated Shaka's innovations)

Just some ideas.

Well, thank you Redking, you solved my problem :)

Sorry about that Chieftess, I just thought this needed no units or previews, but you would know, sorry.

Okay guys I chose a Tribal Warrior?

Ethiopia would be a fine and worthy civ, but not representative of the dynamic that was Bantu-speaking sub-saharan Africa.

The Bantu (or more narrowly, Zulu) in the game are on par with the Celts and Scandinavians (and arguably others, especially the non-included Polynesians), in that they didn't possess a true empire, but rather experienced a period of great expansion and military might through the advance of numerous related tribes and kingdoms. This makes them significant. That they reached the societal stage of Feudalism is indicative of their great expansion, in addition to the huge geographic spread of their languages (much like the Celts and Scandinavians). It's interesting that they also had "berserker" like characters within the militaristic apex of their society.

The Ethipians and Songhai are different. Older, more stable, and smaller. Part of the greater Mediterranian and Mideastern trading realms.

The Zulu, like the Iroquois and Maori (Polynesians of New Zealand) were on the "verge" just as European colonialism intervened. It's fun to imagine what might have happened otherwise, and I think that is a central appeal of Civilization to all of us!

Okay, but I wanted to keep it just zulu.

Ethiopia is a more worthy civ than Zulus, Zulus just had a militaristic time, while the Ethiopians did some good things involving culture and military.

All civs are equally worthy of being in civ as far as I'm concerned. It's just that some did more and some did less.

But they will always be welcome in my personal mods and I'm sure nobody disagrees right?
