v1.52 Can't Install

I just got Civ4 (finally) and I can't get the v1.52 patch to install. After getting an error message once I installed the v1.09 patch because I thought there was an off chance that it was a prerequisite for v1.52, but it didn't help. I've also tried restarting the computer. All I get is this message:

EDIT: Just to clarify, I'm not so stupid as to have not installed Civ4 first. I don't know why the patch can't find it.

I do know that the game makes a folder called....

{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}

in.....

C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information

...which, by default, is a hidden system folder. In there information about the installation, path and whether the 1.09 and 1.52 patches are installed are stored.

I remember this coming up before in this forum, so you might want a search as I'm not sure if it has something to do with an installation not being the default path for the game, then again mine is on another drive and I have had no problem.

I take it that you are using the correct version of the patch for the game, that is no the Direct2drive version...?

I installed it to the default location and my username does have admin rights so those aren't the problem. What's strange is that v1.09 managed to detect the program perfectly fine; only v1.52 had a problem.

I have tried everythng suggested in that thread, and the patch installation still cannot detect Civ4. Before reinstalling Civ4 I uninstalled the demo to see if that was the problem; it wasn't. I'm at a loss.

I know that you said that you tried all the suggestions in the other thread, but I just want to verify that you applied the registry fix mentioned near the end of this thread:

http://apolyton.net/forums/showthread.php?threadid=145581

So, did you? I want to make sure because this registry change usually fixes your problem.

Oh! I didn't see that...

I tried it, but I think it isn't working. I can't change it to an .reg file. (Also, the file that you uploaded doesn't come up, just a bunch of text. [If I "Save Target As" I get Apolyton's advertising page.] Is that right?)

I'm also not sure what I should put in for RegOwner and InstallSource. I think I know, but could you clarify?

I attached the file to this reply. Perhaps that will make it easier for you to download it.

To change the file to a registry file, first make the necessary changes in Notepad and save it with the same name. Then change the name to Civ4.reg.

The file is supposed to contain text.

RegOwner is the name of the user that was logged onto the computer when you installed the game.

InstallSource appears to be the location of the temp folder from which the game was installed. On my PC, this is

C:\DOCUME~1\(User Name)\LOCALS~1\Temp\byeAE.tmp\Disk1\

(where I replaced my own user name with (User Name).

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Hope this works!

I did everything in that thread, substituting in the user name twice (I'm assuming that it would have the same InstallSource location as I just did it default). It gave me the message that the information was added to the Registry. However, it still can't find the install of Civ4 (which still works).

Edit: The version at Apolyton comes up with text in the IE screen rather than a text document, just to clarify.

Do you know how to export the registry key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}

to a text file? If yes, please do so and post it here. I'll take a look at it. Be sure to change the .reg file extension to .txt (so that no one accidentally imports the file into their own registry).

I'll be glad to post detailed instructions on how to do this, if you wish.

OK, I understand now. If you left-click on the file, it opens in your browser. You have to right-click on it to get the Save Target As ... option.

No, I don't know how to do that...

I tried right-clicking as well - instead of downloading the text file, it downloads (consistently, not just once or twice) an html file of Apolyton's advertisement page (the one that comes up when clicking a link there).

OK, try this:

* Download the attached file Civ4_Reg.bat.txt to any convenient location on your system.

* Change the name of the file to Civ4_Reg.bat (in other words, delete the .txt extension).

* Double-click on the file that you just renamed.

* This action should create a file named Civ4_Reg.txt in C:\Windows\Temp. Attach this file to your reply.

Let me know if this doesn't work or if you run into any problems with these instructions.

The problem does not appear to be with your registry: I overwrote my registry entries with yours and the patch installed perfectly.

In reviewing the past messages in this thread, I noticed that someone asked whether you had downloaded the game from Direct2Drive (a perfectly legal way to obtain the game), but I didn't see your answer. So, did you? If yes, then you need to download the patch from Direct2Drive.

Almost out of ideas.

Uninstall the game according to the instructions in this link:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=152620

Then reinstall and try to apply patch 1.52 again (but not patch 1.09 first). (If you have any saved games that you want to keep, move them to some other location first.) If that doesn't work, please post your DXDIAG report (instructions on how to do so can be found in most other threads in this forum).

I managed to find out what was apparently the problem - after downloading the patch a second time the new download was able to find the game. I don't know why it couldn't before. Thank you very much for your help, Petek.
