v1.52 Resources not available

I'm playing the Civ 4 GOTM #1? with the Romans and have v1.52 of the patch. There is iron right next to my city with a road and a mine, yet I can't build Praetorians, and iron doesn't show up under my resources in the foreign advisor section. I am not trading it to anyone. What gives? In the past I had iron and now its gone. Similarly it doesn't think I have copper when I should have it also.

Can you post a save so that we could take a closer look at it?

The only thing I can think of right now is that the city that's next to the iron isn't connected to your capital and therefore you can only build praetorians in that one city. Wasn't clear from your message whether this could be a possibility or not.

There is iron near Cumae in the east, copper near Neapolis in the south. Both mined and connected, but not showing up in my resources.

I took a look at it. The reason why you can't build praetorians anymore is that you have discovered civil service which gives you macemen (which obsolete praetorians although basically they are pretty much the same unit).

Both iron and copper are displayed in the resources box in your cities but NOT on the resources tab of the foreign advisor like you said. I have no idea why... seems like a bug to me. Maybe someone else could check it out?

The foreign advisor shows only the resources that you can trade to someone else. Evidently, everyone else already has iron and copper.

OK, I was looking in the wrong place to see what resources I had, thanks. However, I still don't understand why maceman obsoletes praetorians. Praetorians cost 45(?) and macemen cost 70.
