They weren't really "expansionist" before, either. They'd have a lot of cities, true, but they were all within two spaces of each other, and they'd ruin themselves on the number of cities penalty without even reaching Finland.
Notice that Rhye uses the same thread and same link every time to upload his new version of RFC. Once a patch happens, head first for the "Download latest version here" thread and start loading.
just extract it into the mods folder of your bts-folder.
meaning, replace the old folder that you find there titled "Rhye's and Fall of Civilization" (or something like that) with the one you find in the downloaded zip-file.
So much so, I don't think I could play any 3000BC start with any fewer turns for the classical era.
But beyond that, the slower tech rate is really wonderful! Starting as Rome, and yes I agree it's tougher but some additional challenges for us RFC-vets aren't a bad thing I don't think...I kind of think it was too easy for Rome to have such a vast empire with minimal barb resistance (I believe this was done because the previous short Classical era would have made it too dificult) and this has changed.
Played as Rome and near the end of the classical era I was besieged by barbs on 3 or 4 different fronts, economy was reeling and troops were on strike. It almost felt like being a Roman Emperor in the final years of the empire struggling just to keep everything together.
The best part was that at the time I collapsed around early 1500, I saw no gunpowder units and all medieval or classical military the whole time. I can't remember for the life of me a previous RFC game where I can say that about. I remember in some games (previous version) I would see German Riflemen by 1500 or 1600s.
Also Arabia conquered most of Egypt (I had Buto) by the early 1100s and Persia take Gordium in Anatolia so they do seem to be more aggressive. I would like to have seen how Arabia would have reacted had I as Rome not occupied the rest of North Africa and while they probably should be even more aggressive considering how fast they expanded historically this is a definite improvement over how they acted previously.
I can say without question for me, this is the best version of RFC!
Hmm, I know Rhye tried to balance things out, now that the first half is longer, with Rome. But I think he took it too far. Carthage is just too powerful now, and it is a real struggle to take it. I can't get the original Roman empire, east and west, by 500AD anymore. I might have to do something different.
Also due to the epic barbarians, the Europeans usually get a huge army automatically when they spawn. That makes it harder as Rome--you could say, you're probably doomed--but it's a blast if you're France, Germany, or Spain. In my last game as Germany, I had 8 free horse archers!
I just played one RFC game as Rome with the latest patch so more testing by me (and I assume everyone too) is needed but with that being said, I'm a bit puzzled by so many people saying how tough Carthage is to conquer.
I conquered Carthage on my first game as Rome in the new patch and I say this as someone who is not an expert and as someone who didn't build a million units either in my game.
Perhaps it's patience I don't know. I went into Gaul and settled it before the Celts came out, built a city in Spain, kept my eye on Carthage and waited until they were on Unstable then attacked. Sent 4 Prats near a lightly defended city but before a river where the Carthage army would have to attack me with penalty. Of course they did and lost 3 or 4 units to my...0. I took that city, they collapsed and then took Carthage.
Maybe players that attacked Carthage on turn 1 as Rome need to rethink their strategy now but again, I don't think that veteran RFC players needing to modify their old ways of playing is such a bad thing as some people seem to be indicating. I think that's what keeps the game fresh, exciting and challenging.
I don't get how that was ever a solid strategy to begin with. Seemed to me like Carthage always kept a Numidian hanging around in Qart-Hadasht, which stopped the starting Praetorians in their tracks.
But like you said, it's about patience. The sack of Carthage wasn't carried out by Romulus himself, after all. I placed all my initial settlers in Italy and went after Greece first, giving me five productive cities for the buildings UHV. Only after building the Great Wall did I go after Carthage, and by then they had expanded to Spain, so I only needed one more settler for Londinium.

Massive spread of christianity? Note that this happened apparantly at the same turn the holy roman empire conquered Rome. Maybe it's got something to do with it?
