In the next civ i think the idea of vassalism could be developed. A country that almost defeated another could have the ability to make that civilization his vassal. A vassal must give military and economic tribute and aid whenever the suseran country asks. When i talk in tributes, it is regulary tributes, which is no need to demand.

Please i ask for your comments....

I kind of covered vassals in the thread that there is a link to in my sig. Except vassals were made diplomatically or from them breaking away from your empire peacefully rather than as an option from conquest.

That’s a good idea. In the city building game Zeus: Master of Olympus you can have Vassals and Colonies and on regular basis they pay tribute to your own city in form of goods or gold. I think something like that could be integrated in Civilization.

This also means that you can dominate a larger area without all the micro management it usually takes. I can also see interesting scenarios when the Vassals and Colonies try to revolt. Overall I think this could add to long and interesting games.

I think vassalge and maybe even puppet states would be a great alternative to having to conquer the map.

Yes, and instead of conquering future ineficient cities, with lots of corruption (if they are very far from the palaces), you "control" those cities and their production.

Don't know what it's like in SMAC, but I'm guessing like a semi-independant province/kingdom that pays tribute to you in the form of troops, techs, gold, etc.

I imagine vassals to behave like Chieftess describes so that they can build their own units but still contribute but would give a percentage of their income to the home nation.

yes, that was my idea. And with vassal system you could see your vassal's city status, for example. I'm not excluding the option of the human player himself being a vassal of a computer player...

By the way, what was that thing of Alpha Centauri?

well, if those cities were very far away from your palaces, they would produce much more corruption and waste than if they were administrated by a few square landed palace...

Dunno, why wouldn't you finish your opponent.... A dead civ can give less than your cities at that place. (imo)

The idea to vassalise them would be that otherwise these cities at the edge of the empire would be more likely to rebel and try and break away anyway so it may be a better idea to vassalise them first and then diplomatically annex them later to speed up their conversion to your culture and reduce the risk of them rebelling in the future.

Yeah, thats another reason...

Also, it would be less trouble. Instead of marching your army into every town they have and killing off all the defenders, you approach them and demand that they become your vassals. Your army has been saved several precious turns and you've still essentially defeated your opponent.

In Alpha Centauri, if your enemy was inevitably doomed, they could approach you and swear a pact to serve you. Factions that surrendered this way would be considered eliminated for Conquest victories.

Put vassalism system would create a more realistic game and would give much more time to do other things....
