Version 2.8 discussion

I think I remember seeing that game but never played it myself. Can't remember what its tech tree was like.

Here it is. Some nice names to mine there, but part of the appeal was the profoundly beautiful interface, which was such a breakthrough for its time that it is yet to be rivaled, let alone duplicated. It's worth trying out for that alone.

If anyone can advise how I can get the old girl up and running again on a modern PC, I'd be very appreciative.

In general, I'd like to see some more active diplomacy. Maybe the first to research Mass Media gets a +2 relations bonus with other civs, or some sort of transhuman technology/project that can end wars, erase/implant diplomatic memories, etc...

The more quirky options (as opposed to the usual +x% commerceproductionfood boost), the greater the replayability and ability to retain interest.

On a related note, in future expansions, special events need an overhaul to be RoM-sized.

From a modder who has messed with Diplomacy before, it isn't easy to mess with diplomacy. Perhaps the +2 relations boost could be done in python, but the problem with python is that the AI never see the python code and never consider it, so the human gets an advantage.

I agree, and went to code some randomevents, mainly stealing ideas from an online game called nationstates, but the thing is events take 3-4 times the effort to code as a building because you need to code an XML entry for every option... not fun. But, I agree.

yeah the those broken events suck,
I get the herbal test event nearly every game now - and everything it can give is the +1 :) / 10 turns, as the other options don't have the bonus :health: possibility 90% and 50% risk-option for losing population active anymore.

Fall from Heaven has a Trust spell that raises your relations +3 with all AI, but I don't know that the AI has ever cast it. Things like the first to reach Mass Media triggering a relations bonus could benefit the AI passively...

BTW, Ascendancy is quite easy to get up and running on the DOS box and it has a nice tutorial (as well as a patch to boost AI play), so well worth a look. Just had a nice game - picked it back up in 15 minutes. Very smooth game play/interface, especially for the era.

let me impose what will happen, when you install and get an old game running you get a nostalgia rush and play for a couple hours, maybe a half a game. then something reminds me you of why you stopped playing that game so long ago. then you hit the retro wall and stop. i did this with Master of Orion...

off topic but retro -- my favorite game of all all time is Machiavelli The Prince, i cannot tell you how great this game was. and multiplayer hotseat, it got absolutely intense. i think Colonization touches upon commodity trading, wonder why CIV never has... (finish with Avalon Hill's Advanced Civilization [also the best board game ever made] and 1830 and the Railroad Tycoon series... too bad v. 3 had bad multiplayer OOS, all of these via abandonia or other dos parks). on a side note i sometimes question the notion of single hex resources. wheat doesnt grow in such a small area globally. you could say coal does. but cows do not, they graze like sheep vast areas... it makes me question the whole resource thing. but i always liked the CIV methods and never went down that road...

Somehow we've overlooked the Crystal Palace or the World Expo as a National Wonder/World Project respectively.

Have not posted in this thread, which now seems to be "the main" thread for Rom2 . . . I still get notifications for some of the other threads that have now got really long, so I justed wanted to pop in here and say great to see that RoM is alive and well.

Myself, I have not played Civ for months (Fallout, Baldur's Gate, etc. have taken over) but maybe one day before too long I'll update to some of these latest versions or some of these "modmods" and give it a whirl.

Keep up the good work you guys!

This is so true - adding events takes so much more time than anything else in modding. Though after making lots of new events, it does get easier and faster to make new ones. :)

Similar idea to the Mastery Victory I asked about many months ago (perhaps there's been some development there?), that was a no go at that time because of technical reason explained by zappara.

I have a request:
To be able to do the space race, and UN stuff without it ending/finishing/winning the game.

Can this be done?
Would you please make this part of RoM zappara?

ya if its possible would be awesome to be able to have the voting while not being a victory condition...nothing quite like being 2 turns away from finishing that last piece of ss and being nuked bk to stoneage

I would think some more pre-modern or modern events involving the civics would be interesting to incorporate, such as...

Caste revolt - The lower castes/classes have gone up in arms against the government! You can either accede to their demands, compromise, or refuse them, but prepare to accept deep consequences...

Grant the lower classes power - Switch to Proletarian (+1 Happiness for 10/20 turns)
Grant social equality - Switch to Marxism, (or in case for Afforess's Egalitarian or Socialism) (+4 Happiness for 10/20 turns)
Refuse their demands - -2/-4 Unhappiness in 4 Largest Cities possible revolt

Any thoughts on this?

Zappara, EF has made a fix for the Religion Adviser screen.
Yes, I know - I provided the python code for him  We discussed about it in this thread when I noticed that the new screen didn't have scroll functions. He used my changes to create the ReligionUtil for the next BUG version. We still need to figure out how to make the top part of the screen scrolling - if anyone wants to tackle this problem, go ahead, as it would help me, BUG team and any other mod that uses BUG mod. :)

I do like the idea for events which force civics changes, especially with Revolutions, however, it probably would take a lot of work with Python.

On a different topic, I have an issue with the Bakery require the Granary building. When I conquer a city and the Modern Granary is left standing, the upgrade removes the Bakery's prerequisite. This is the first time I have noticed this problem since I first started playing RoM due to the change in the Pyramids. Sorry if someone else brought up this issue.
